And How They Improve Your Quality of Life

Bruce Cameron wrote, "When we adopt a dog or any pet, we know it is going to end with us having to say goodbye, but we still do it. And we do it for a very good reason: They bring so much joy and optimism and happiness. They attack every moment of every day with that attitude."

Pets improve our quality of life. Especially when we make our pets a part of our lives. A pet is as unique as the owner themselves, and finding your soulmate can completely change your life around.

1. No matter what, they are happy to see you.

Of course, sometimes cats don't seem happy to see you, but deep down they definitely are. There is truly nothing better than walking in the door from a long day of work just to see your dog wagging his tail, waiting for you. It's that realization that to him or her, you matter.

2. They offer comfort when you are sad or upset.

I know this is a biggie for me. Whenever I have a bad day or have a crying moment, my pup is always right next to me. He looks up at me with those big old eyes of his and all of a sudden I don't feel so hurt.

3. Dogs can help with fitness goals.

How many people have you heard say they wanted to get a dog to take on walks? I can't even remember how many times I've heard that. But it's true. Taking the dog for a walk gets you out into the fresh air. Whether a short or a long walk, you are both getting a form of exercise, and you get to bond even more.

4. Reading a book takes on a whole other level.

That is because you have a cuddly little cat curled in your lap, or even the head of your Great Dane leaned against the same pillow you are on. If there is anything more comforting and relaxing than reading a book with your pet, please do tell.

5. Constant Humor

Dogs and cats are hilarious. There are hundreds of videos that have gone viral. We just can't get enough of cats in bread, or throwing food for the dog to catch and miss. When I need something to laugh at, what better way than to grab a laser pen and aim it right in front of the cat. Even when they don't mean to be funny, they are.

6. When They Are Protective

I've lived alone. I've went on walks alone. Things can be scary living in the city. But knowing a big old hound dog has your back is nice. I sleep better at night knowing he is there. I mean, yeah I feel bad for the mailman when he comes, but at least I know by the barks when the mail is here.

7. There are service animals.

Service dogs come in all shapes and sizes. They can be trained with specific ailments in mind. Dogs travel around to hospitals and schools to offer comfort from sickness or stress. I've even seen a happy golden retriever at the Denver airport available for travelers to pet and cuddle. In college during finals week, several puppies were brought in to lift spirits. Cats are the same way. Sometimes you just need to hold a cat against you and listen to it purr. As it does, your own heart will steady itself out.

8. They will never judge you.

So you want to eat that entire pizza? You best believe your dog will be cheering you on (hoping a crumb falls, of course). Your cat may look at you with judging eyes, but in truth she is just happy you are there. No matter what you do, they will love you. You are their friend, their soul mate, their world. They won't turn away from you because you lost your job. They won't condemn you for a mistake. They are there because they love you.

9. They come in all shapes and sizes.

So you can only have a pet under 20 pounds at your apartment? Good thing there are cats and dogs that size. Or you want to have the largest dog you can imagine? Great Dane's are a real thing! Whatever you can handle feeding and taking care of, there is a dog to fit the bill. Every pet is cute in its own special way.

10. They start to take on your personality.

This is one of the coolest things. Have you ever seen someone walking there dog and think, "wow, they look alike"? It's a thing. Next time you are out and about look closely at the pets people have. It fits their unique style and personality. It truly is like having a lifelong best friend that just gets you, and doesn't talk back in the meantime.

Whether you raised them from a baby or got them at a shelter as an adult, pets are an amazing addition to our lives. They are loyal, trusting, joy-filled, optimistic creatures that love without end. If you are looking to add a new family member into your life, check out the local shelters and save a life! There's too many reasons not to!
