dog
It's no coincidence that a dog is a man's best friend; they're more faithful than most other animals, and more faithful than many people.
Chop
Every once in a while, a dog enters your life and changes everything. Dogs have a way of finding the people who need them and filling an emptiness we didn't even know we had. I walked into the auburn humane society on a cold day in January in search of my soulmate. I'm not sure what led me there as it was not a place, I planned on looking. As I walked in, I asked if they had any dogs available for adoption after tirelessly looking at other crowded shelters and being waitlisted behind the people in front of me who were already first in line for the dog. The woman replied," umm, we have two," and led me through the door. As I walked through, straight ahead of me, there he was. I just knew. He was loud and ferocious barking behind that small cage in a quite aggressive ferocious way. As if he was screaming let me out of here. He had been a stray and had been there six months. Unneutered large two-year-old German shepherd mix. This big, beautiful boy confined to a cage looking for his forever home. I have never seen a dog so excited to come out of a cage and into the world! I fell in love right then. His energy, his adventurous happy spirit, I wanted to take him home right then. Being a stray, he desperately needed a bath and smelled so bad it was almost unbearable. But what a beauty. Dandruff and all I said, I will take him. I returned three days later to pick him up since they had to neuter him first. It was the longest three days of my life. I named him Chop. From that day on Chop has been my best friend, my soulmate and my family.

This memory is not the one dog lovers want to read. It's the kind we avoid until we cannot possibly avoid it anymore. But, it's the reality all dog caretakers will face one day.

There we were - my partner and I. Freshly independent and recently moved into our own home. Two strong, separate incomes, and enough years ahead before the desire for a child arrives.
Cheering Up Gracie
Millie Bobbie Bear was an unexpected addition to the Frazer family. After my 17-year-old sister's relationship ended, she showed up with an Australian shepherd puppy, the result of her post-breakup impulsiveness.
The Healing Star
My life was barren, devoid of any hope of a brighter day. I had moved to a boring town and resided in a drab, impersonal house. My days consisted of arising at the crack of dawn, drinking a lonely cup of coffee, and going to my depressing job that offered limited monetary rewards and no intrinsic ones.

The spirit and strength Delco has brought upon our family was a rare experience to go through. It all started when we went to have a look at the German Shepherd x Tibetan Mastiff pups and we we’re smitten with the runt of the litter; we knew from the second he came towards us that he would fit in perfectly with our family.
Profoundly and perfectly.
You know, it’s much harder than you might think, choosing just one memory with your dog to expound upon. I’m sitting here in my homemade home office, trying to decide on which adventure with Aspen to delve into. Aspen is my now 2 year old blue heeler, border collie cross (a border heeler, if you will). She is just a little thing, about as tall as my knee is high, with smooth grey and white mottled fur, tonnes of freckles, brown socks, and a perfect black oval and black triangle (and black splotch) on her side and back. Yes, she is just a little thing, but she takes up all of the space in my day, in my mind, in my heart.

I couldn’t get my key to turn in the deadbolt of my apartment, which was just par for the course of the kind of day I was having. I was already feeling guilty for calling it quits an hour early, and all I could think about was this was some kind of sign that I should just turn around and go back to work. My decision was made for me at the last possible moment, when the lock turned, and before I knew it, I was already halfway through the door. I was hot, and sweaty, my hair was soaked, my clothes were stuck to my skin, and about as miserable as you could be. The air was off during the day to save a dime, so my apartment was like a sauna, and smelled like someone started a gym in a speak-easy. “What else?,” I said in my out loud voice to the air you could feel on your face. “You know what?” I answered back, “I just don’t care.” There was nothing else that could go wrong with my day, at that moment.

The Weekend Dog. Being on the brink of eight, there were a lot of things Taryn didn’t understand. Things that even her older sister Hope, having just turned nine, wasn’t able to explain to her either.

The Sierra Nevada are a rugged mountain range in California and Nevada of granite spires, high-altitude meadows, tumbling creeks, and ice cold lakes. In other words, it’s wilderness paradise, especially for backpackers like myself who like unplugging from society and roughing it for a few days.

You disreputable assmongle! How on earth can one dog get so FILTHY? I finally managed to get 4 year old Seughie to focus for a few seconds to get him out of the Harbor at Talbert, Scotland. He was head to toe covered in fetid, black, sticky, decomposing sea filth, and surface oil. I had driven to this spot to give Seughie a "hoof." My term for taking him out and trying to exhaust him several times a day. We had been on the road for most of the day and he had more energy than usual. Now I needed to find some form of clean water source to get him somewhat respectable before we go back to the hotel... which had white everything. Sheets, carpet, towels, everything!

I was watching Jack dreaming a few days ago. His legs paddled in a running motion, his nose twitching left and right. He was making those cute little snuffling snorts that dog owners know and love, and every now and then the room was punctuated by a staccato of gleeful barks.
