Bringing up and taking care of dogs could be a challenging job. According to historians, Caucasian shepherd dogs were tamed more than 25,000 years ago. Since that time, the human race has taken care of over 400 breeds of different shapes and sizes. These dogs have been the universal favourite of owners who love canines.

The cost to raise and maintain these dogs could range anywhere between 400 to 800 dollars every year. This includes their veterinary consultation cost, their toys, their meals, and their license. However, this amount excludes the other costs such as the leash, collar, crate, spay operations, and crate cost.

How are Caucasian Shepherd Dogs Fed?

  • When they are puppies within the age group of 8 to 12 weeks, they require almost four bowls full of food every day.
  • As soon as they reach the age group of 6 months, their requirement decreases to 3 meals per day.
  • Between the age group of 6 months to 1 year, they require 2 bowls full of food every day.
  • As they turn 1, 1 meal a day is good enough for them.
  • Sometimes they may ask for 2 meals, and they completely depend on you to understand their eating pattern.
  • Good quality, nutritious dry food ensures the great health of these dogs to grow. Their food could be combined with broth, water, or canned food. They may also like eating vegetables, fruits, cottage cheese, and cooked eggs. They could also be fed branded, premium-quality food specially made for puppies. Table food should be given less as it could create an imbalance in their vitamin and mineral levels, make them obese and result in teeth and bone issues. The water they drink should be fresh and clean. Good hygiene keeps them away from falling ill.

    Physical Activity

They must exercise daily to stay healthy and fit. It would also help in keeping their minds active and stimulated. Exercise keeps them from getting bored, which could otherwise make them very difficult to handle. Let them play outside in the open to chase, dig, chew, retrieve and herd as they like. The type of exercise would depend on their age.

    Grooming

You could play a big role in decreasing the shedding in these dogs by keeping them clean and brushing them regularly. Check for ticks and fleas each day during the summer season. Most of these dogs remain fine if they are only bathed few times a year. It would help if you rinsed the soap from them, or their dirt could get stuck on their soap.

    How to keep these dogs?

The Caucasian shepherd dogs require a quiet and cosy place to sleep on their bed. You could place a pillow or a clean sheet on their bed for comfort. Wash their linen regularly to avoid chances of infection. If these dogs are kept outdoors for a lot of time, make sure they drink lots of water and have access to a covered shelter during the year. Ensure your dog has an ID tag so that anyone could return them to you if they go missing. Their timely vaccinations are also very important post ensuring that the vet fully assesses them. Maintain a checklist at all times so that you have your supplies for them in place.

    • Dish for food
    • Dish for water
    • Good quality dog snacks and food
    • Chewable toys
    • Comb and brush for their grooming
    • Leash
    • Pup carrier
    • Collar with license and ID tag
    • Crate for training purpose
    • Toothbrush
    • Bed or box with towel or sheet

    Things to remember

It would help if you never fed the following to these dogs as it might make them extremely sick and cause allergic reactions:

    • Turkey, chicken, or any poultry dish with bones
    • Beverages containing alcohol
    • Raisins and grapes
    • Tea, chocolate, coffee, or any food that contains caffeine
    • Garlic, chives, and onions
    • Salty foods and salt
    • Dough with yeast
    • Rotten food
    • Leaves of tomato, stems, and fruits that are unripe

It may be challenging to take care of Caucasian shepherd dog puppy, but it is a delight to watch them grow. You must keep in mind all the points mentioned above, along with what the vet mentions to you during your visits to the clinic. A frequent update would keep you assured that the dog is healthy and growing just fine.
