I have been training horses and dogs for many years, and now I'm in search of a new dog. Finding the right dog can be challenging. I've had various dogs in the past, and I've loved them all, but my favorite was my German Shepherd. I appreciate dogs that can think for themselves.

Once, we had an Akita staying with us, but emotionally, I couldn't get too attached because I knew he was only visiting, and he was already a teenager. I believe that getting a dog should be a committed decision. Doubts and excuses like allergies, conflicts with other dogs, or moving to a place that doesn't allow dogs shouldn't lead to giving up on your dog.

During my search for a new dog, I watched many YouTube videos from dog trainers. I found one trainer particularly interesting because his dogs are consistently in a good mood and well-behaved in his videos. He's both enjoyable to watch and informative. I believe that animals, including dogs, aren't born mean, but their life experiences and future expectations can influence their behavior.

If you're a serious person, you're more likely to have a dog that may not be overly friendly with others. Dogs, like mirrors, can reflect your own personality. Here's a brief summary of my beliefs in dog training.

Three crucial factors:

1. **Expertise**: This is all about experience. When seeking guidance in dog training, look for individuals with broad-ranging experience in handling various dogs. They should have more experience than a 12-year-old walking dogs.

2. **Work Ethic**: Success depends on your willingness to put in the effort. If you're ready to work consistently and persistently, you can achieve well-behaved dogs. It might take time, as there's a range of talent among trainers and dogs, but a strong work ethic is key.

3. **Realistic Expectations**: Expertise and hard work alone don't guarantee success because success is subjective. What one person considers a well-trained dog, another may not. Sometimes even the best-trained dogs have owners who are unsatisfied because they expect perfection.

In summary, combining expertise, a strong work ethic, and realistic expectations is the path to successful dog training.

A well-behaved house dog, in my opinion, is one that is calm, obedient, and has good manners. This is a simple measure of success in basic dog training. However, many people want more, such as fancy tricks and skills. Realistic expectations are crucial. You need to set appropriate short and long-term goals and work towards them at the right pace. Rushing can lead to frustration and is a common cause of discouragement in dog training. It's essential to understand that achieving the level of progress seen in some online videos, takes time and extensive experience. My training involves daily exposure to a large number of people and dogs, providing a substantial amount of socialization and practice for the dogs. When it comes to dog training, here are the key points to remember:

1. **Training Volume Matters**: Training a dog requires time and consistency. If you can't match the training volume due to limited access to facilities, dogs, and assistance, your progress may be slower.

2. **Frustration and Tension**: Slow progress can lead to frustration and tension between you and the dog, making training less enjoyable. This, in turn, affects your work ethic and your trust in your chosen methodology.

3. **Realistic Expectations**: Setting realistic expectations is crucial. No dog or trainer is perfect. Even a nearly perfect dog can have moments of imperfection, which is entirely normal. Expecting perfection can shatter your image of the dog and your abilities as a trainer.

In conclusion, the secrets to successful dog training are not hidden. There are no magical shortcuts. Success is based on expertise, a strong work ethic, and the ability to set realistic expectations.

So, stop searching for secrets and focus on these three essential elements.
