7 Tips to Train Your German Shepherd Puppy

Don't read them; Practice them

German shepherds are one of the world's most intelligent dog breeds, making them excellent companions and family pets. However, if you want to successfully train your German shepherd puppy, you must first learn how your puppy thinks and reacts, and then find creative ways to motivate him or her to respond to commands such as come or sit.

Follow these seven German shepherd puppy training tips, and you'll soon have a well-behaved pet ready to show off at every opportunity!

1) Select the best time to begin training.

When your German Shepherd puppy is 8 weeks old, it is time to begin training. Puppies are most receptive to training at this age, and their brains are rapidly developing. You can begin training a dog as young as 7 weeks old, but 8 weeks is the ideal age.

2) Keep training sessions to a minimum

Keep training sessions brief, enjoyable, and reward your dog with treats or praise. You should spread out the 10 to 15 minutes throughout the day to avoid your German Shepherd becoming bored with the same routine commands. In the beginning, aim for at least five three-minute sessions per day.

Set aside a space in your home for them to call their own. When they need time away from the family, provide them with a safe place to go and be alone. This will aid in the prevention of destructive behaviors as they mature.

3) Reward your puppy for good behavior

Positive reinforcement motivates German Shepherds to behave well. When your puppy obeys a command, reward them with treats, affection, and praise. This will encourage obedience and strengthen their bond with you as their owner. However, use treats sparingly so that they retain their appeal as a reward.

4) Maintain consistency in your commands

Inconsistency in training is the most common mistake of GSD owners. It is critical that your commands and praise are consistent. Consistently recognize the puppy's good behavior and discourage bad behavior.

Don't punish your German Shepherd when the real issue is a lack of consistency in training.

Don't expect your dog to know how to behave if you only train them once a week. If you want a German Shepherd to be trained quickly, it is YOUR responsibility to become a consistent teacher.

Consider taking your dog on walks, hikes, to dog parks, and so on. A tired puppy will not be as prone to misbehaving!

5) Socialize Early

Socialization is the most important German Shepherd puppy training tip.

Some veterinarians will advise you to confine your dog until the full set of vaccines has been administered. Unfortunately, if you keep your puppy inside until he is 4-6 months old, his socialization period will be over and your chances of raising a friendly and confident dog will be significantly reduced!

I recommend that you find a safe puppy socialization class because this developmental period is critical for preventing future behavior problems. Aside from that, you must socialise your puppy on a daily basis.

6) Avoid using punishment

Physical punishment is harmful to German Shepherds. It is not recommended to use an electric shock collar because the dog may associate the pain with the wrong thing and develop fear-biting. To train your german shepherd puppy, use positive reinforcement.

7) Be patient

Want to be a good German Shepherd trainer? First, you have to train yourself and patience is the key to good training. You need to make sure that your puppy has adequate time for play, exercise, food, sleep, and potty breaks. Don't lose nerves and don't shout at your buddy.
