5 Simple Ways to Get Your Dog to Pay Attention

Dogs are notoriously easygoing creatures, but that doesn’t mean they don’t have their limits. If your dog has become accustomed to getting away with bad behavior or if he just seems downright uninterested in you, it can be frustrating and heartbreaking at the same time. Thankfully, there are plenty of things you can do to get your dog to pay attention. Keep reading to learn how to get your dog to pay attention!

1) Use Treats

When you want your pup to pay attention, start by putting a tasty treat in front of his nose. When he sniffs it and looks at you, gently but firmly say yes. If he tries to look away or sniff the ground, give him a little shake and bring his face back up. Once he holds eye contact for 10 seconds, say yes again and reward him with the treat. You can repeat this process as many times as necessary until your dog knows what you want from him.

2) Say Something

1. You should always be able to predict how your dog will react to something before giving the command. This is especially important if you are teaching them a new command or routine. If they don't know what is coming next, it will be difficult for them to focus and follow along. 2. Tell your dog in advance what you want them to do when you give the command, such as sit or down. This way they can start thinking about how they need to react when given the command so that they can execute it quickly and correctly. 3. Give your dog a quick reward after their first successful attempt at doing the action you asked of them so that they feel accomplished and have more motivation for continuing with this behavior in the future. 4.

3) Move Around

If you're having trouble getting your dog's attention, try moving around. This technique is simple, because all you have to do is get up and move. If your dog is distracted by something in the house or outside, try standing up from where you are sitting and walking over towards them. They might be more inclined to pay attention if they are aware that they are the center of your focus.

4) Interact With Them

Interacting with your dog is a great way to get them focused on you and not something else. Give them a toy or food that they like and watch the excitement in their eyes. Ask them for an object by saying find it. Play hide-and-seek with your dog by finding hiding spots all around the house, and then let him find you. Engage in a game of tug-of-war or fetch with your pup. Teach your dog tricks, like how to shake hands or jump through hoops, so that he has something fun to do when he's bored.

5) Ignore Them (only if you must)

Dogs get distracted very easily and can lose focus on their task at hand. The best way to get them back on track is not with a reward but by simply ignoring them. After all, if you're paying attention, they're not doing anything wrong! This will seem counterintuitive at first, but try it and see how your dog responds. You may be surprised!
