When most people think of dog training, they think of the basic dog training commands—sit and other. While those things are important, don't underestimate the benefits of training a dog to do tricks.

Dog tricks are a great way to provide mental stimulation for your dog, and many of them build on basic commands. It's also a lot of fun to teach your dog some cool dog tricks to show off to your friends!

1. Speak

Training a dog to speak is fun and it helps to solve a common behavior problem.

To stop excessive barking, many dog trainers recommend using 'speak' and 'quiet' commands.

Putting these on command allows your dog to bark in specific situations while also giving you control over when the barking begins and ends.

2. Shake

Have your dog greet your friends by shaking hands.

This is a simple dog trick that can usually be taught to a dog in a few short training sessions. Most dogs enjoy using their paws and will enjoy the positive attention they receive when performing this trick.

To teach "shake," simply have your dog sit. Then, pick up their paw while saying "shake" and give them a treat. Hold it for two seconds, say "shake" again and give the other treat.

3. Wave

Training a dog to wave hello or goodbye is a fun and fairly simple dog trick.

Start by training your dog to shake paws. You will use the same action your dog uses to shake to train it to lift its paw to wave. This is a great attention-getting trick that will be very cute to watch.

4. Roll Over

Most people train a dog to roll over in several small parts and work up to getting the dog to roll over all the way. It may take some effort to train a dog to do this dog trick, but it is well worth it. It's lots of fun, and it also serves as a building block for several other dog tricks, such as playing dead.

5. Play Dead

Your friends are sure to be blown away when you hold your finger like a gun and say bang and your dog falls to the floor to play dead. Although it looks impressive, it's not as hard as you might think to train a dog to play dead, especially if you have already trained it to roll over.

6. Back up

Back up is a fun dog trick that can come in handy in a variety of situations. Once your dog knows how to back up on command, you can use it to keep it from rushing out the door, crowding you at the refrigerator, or just to entertain your friends.

Back up is fairly simple to teach a dog. All you need is some patience and a handful of treats. You can quickly train a dog to back up a few steps when you give the command.

7. Stay

Arguably the most important command to teach your dog, “stay” will come in handy daily. For their safety and the safety of others, “stay” needs to be taught at an early age.

To teach it, have your dog start by sitting. Then slowly back away from your dog. If he or she moves toward you, say “no” and have them sit. When they stop, say “stay.” Then reward and say “come.”

8. Wait

Similar to “stay,” “wait” is used specifically for when people enter the door of your home. No matter how well behaved your dog is, they’ll most likely get excited when someone enters your house, but it’s important they don’t barrel into you or your guests.

To teach “wait,” it’s best to have two people train your pup. Have one go outside the door to your house and the other stay inside with your dog. The person outside should open the door. When your dog starts moving toward the door the person inside should say “wait” as the person outside closes the door.

9. Kiss

Training a dog to kiss is one of the easiest tricks to teach. While not everyone enjoys a big, wet doggie smooch, this dog trick usually goes over very well with kids. By putting a little treat on your cheek and adding the command, you'll soon be able to get all the affection you want from your dog on demand!

Another benefit of teaching your dog to kiss on cue is that is can help you prevent unwanted licking.

10. Come

For your dog’s safety, “come” should be one of the first commands you teach them. It can save their life if they start to run off or get into an unsafe area.

For “come,” simply put your dog on a leash and say the command while you tug lightly on their leash. When he or she comes to you, reward them with a treat. This direction will take consecutive days of training, so be patient.
