Sitting in the present but living in the past?

As humans, it’s a common sight for people to keep thinking about their past activities.

But,

Thinking about the past and living in it are two different scenarios. Two different scenarios with two different conclusions.

I am a 19-year-old student pursuing graduation. I keep thinking of my “good old school days” till the point that now I have started to live in the past. I have my uncle who is retired from the Army. Whenever we have a conversation, he pours a pinch of his good old Army days instances, to the point that everyone has become exhausted listening to those.

But have you ever wondered why this is such a common sight in almost all of us?

I thought a lot about it, talked to my friends, spoke to my inner self, and finally got the answer.

The Past is Familiar.

The reason why we are so comfortable living in the past is that it is familiar to our mind and heart.

When the past was really good, thinking about it and living in it gives you a sense of comfort and happiness.

We already know all the characters, twists, climax, conclusion of our past activities and it fouls our mind that you have the ultimate control over those activities.

They provide you a distraction from your present activities and challenges in life. As humans, we all are always afraid and anxious to try something new and experience new hurdles in life. So, it is very comforting for our thoughts and mind to sit down and re-watch the same experiences.

Your Thoughts are Fooling You.

Now, as you have shaped your “living in the past” into a habit, your mind gets more powerful and starts to control you.

It sends you signals in the form of thoughts that,

You will never again reach that level of happiness, satisfaction, status, acceptance.

The things that have happened till now is your “life”.Nothing coming to you in the present or future will be as good as it was. It’s crazy how we let our thoughts and mind control our whole body if we don’t control them in the first place.

The good and worse thing about life is its unpredictability. It’s like flipping a coin and expecting either heads or tails and as the coin hits the ground,

Boom.

The coin stands straight perpendicular to the ground.

How to live in the Moment.

The most important life skill in my opinion is to be present at the moment itself and cherish it to the fullest. But that’s not everyone's cup of tea.

Especially in these times of uncertainty.

We are all uncertain and afraid of our upcoming future, surrounded by the conversations of how good the pre-pandemic days were.

Again, forgetting to live in the present and enjoy in any way possible.

The one trick, that I personally use to be present at the moment is -

MEDITATE.

Meditation is not only a breathing exercise.

It helps you calm your mind by exercising your thoughts. It teaches you how to tackle the distractions and focus on the present.

It’s okay to feel certain things. Just don’t get stuck anywhere. Meditating 10 minutes a day will help you a lot in life. Apply this trick in your life and witness the positive growth of your thoughts.

Conclusion.

Control your thoughts. Past experiences are here so that we can all learn from them. Life is unpredictable. Always give your best and enjoy the moment till it lasts. Never fear to try something new in life.

New experiences add value to your life.
