What Society Imposes vs. What We Choose

Choosing authenticity in a world of conformity

By Rob KSPublished about a year ago • 3 min read

From the moment we are born, we begin imitating—first sounds, then movements. Before our first birthday, we crawl, building strength in our little legs until we can finally stand. Our first steps are greeted with smiles and applause from parents and relatives. Family becomes the first model we follow. And when we look beyond the home, society offers more of the same.

Again and again, people repeat the same patterns, often making the same mistakes for generations. The danger lies in following the crowd without ever asking why.

Here are some areas where it’s worth pausing to think before simply doing what everyone else does.

Education

Parents play the first role in shaping their children’s education, beginning at home and extending to the schools they choose. Some children are enrolled in daycare at just one or two years old, and from there they enter a traditional system with little flexibility and many flaws. It often leaves few options to take another path.

Later, as teenagers, many feel the pressure to pick a university major—a decision that can lock them into years of study before they truly know themselves.

Think Twice: After high school, the real question is not what degree to pursue, but what life to build. A young person should ask: How can I sustain myself? How can I serve and bring value to the world? These choices shouldn’t be rushed or shaped by the expectations of family or peers. Instead, they require self-reflection, intellectual growth, and spiritual grounding.

Appearances

Chasing appearances is another trap. Doing what everyone else does just to fit in or stay fashionable diminishes human worth. True value isn’t found in possessions or image, but in character. Social media, peer pressure, and cultural trends often distract us from what truly matters—our growth, our goals, and the path toward our purpose.

Think Twice: Fitting in at the cost of authenticity is too high a price. You don’t need to pretend to be someone else to be accepted. Choosing authenticity—and living with honesty and humility—builds the kind of character that lasts and leads to genuine success.

Relationships and Family

The expectation to marry and have children still weighs heavily in many cultures. Once you reach a certain age, family members often begin to ask, When will you settle down? To them, it seems inevitable—marriage, children, the same cycle repeated. Yet they know marriage brings its share of challenges, commitments, and burdens. Still, many encourage it without a second thought.

Think Twice: Marriage is not for everyone, and raising children is a responsibility that requires maturity and stability. Choosing a life partner is one of the most difficult decisions a person can make, and it should never be taken as an obligation.

In fact, many people live happy, fulfilled lives as singles. Marriage is a personal choice, not a societal duty, and it deserves careful thought before being embraced.

Culture and Beliefs

Many traditions are followed simply out of habit. But do we truly feel at peace when practicing them? Do we know their origin or understand the reason behind them? Around the world there are thousands of religions, and from an early age we are guided by the faith of our parents and relatives. Many attend churches and accept as truth everything a priest or pastor proclaims from the pulpit. They claim to love God and believe in the Bible, yet rarely take the time to study these sacred writings in depth.

Think Twice: The search for truth is a personal act, not something to be imposed by society at large. Only through individual reflection and the growth of intellect and spirituality can each person discover the truth that will lead them to live out their beliefs in a conscious and authentic way.

The Masks

Society teaches us that we must fit in; that showing our fragility is dangerous; that acceptance depends on hiding who we really are. And so, many end up living behind a mask that, over time, becomes heavier than life itself.

Think Twice: Behind every mask lies an authentic face, waiting to be seen. Authenticity can be uncomfortable because it exposes us, but it is also profoundly liberating. Taking off the mask means accepting that we are not perfect, that we carry fears, doubts, and contradictions. And paradoxically, it is when we dare to show that vulnerability that we find the most genuine connection with others.
