The Power of Negative Thinking

When Bad Thoughts Happen to Good People

All things in the world have their own very specific energy signal, or frequency, at which it vibrates. Inanimate objects, people, plants, animals all have energy signatures that are detectable. At the very basic level, everything in the universe is essentially made up of the same stuff - some kind of energy.

That being said, did you know that thoughts have a measurable energy signature of their own? Research has been performed on the subject of 'thought energy', and it has been proven, measurably, that when a test subject is asked to think of a certain thought, their brain waves or electric energy signals will change to reflect those thoughts. When the subject moves on to other things and then is asked to think about the same things again, that energy signature of that particular thought is similar enough to be recognized.

This energy eventually dissipates when the subject goes on to think about other things, but where does this energy go? Essentially, it is distributed out into the world, the universe, and eventually becomes so spread out that it is not detectable as a distinct energy signature of its own. However, energy never dies, or disappears. It only changes how it presents itself. This energy attracts and connects to other like energy, and that continues to live on in the world around you.

I want you to think for a moment about a phenomenon that sociologists talk about known as 'mob mentality'.

Mob mentality has been attributed to riots, raiding, looting and the like, where ordinary people, under extraordinary circumstances, gather together and often end up doing things that go against who they are, their very nature, such as violent acts, illegal acts, and have even been known to injure and kill others when caught up in a mob mentality situation.

You may wonder how this phenomenon occurs. Sociologist and psychologists try to explain it, but there isn't any clear, scientific evidence as to how mob mentality comes about, but some scientists have a theory.

Energy attracts energy. To be more specific, like energy usually attracts like energy. Now, if thoughts truly have an energy signature that is detectable, it would stand to reason that similar thoughts would attract similar thoughts. After all, aren't we usually most attracted to people we consider to be 'like-minded' to us?

Who knew that attraction, that is, who we choose to spend our time with, share out lives with, friends, lovers, spouses, etc, might very well be based on a very primitive level of energy signatures of ours closely matching and thus attracting similar energy signatures in others?

Mob mentality, then, is believed by some to occur when a group of people, usually people who are like-minded about an event, occurrence, or situation, are gathered together in close proximity, all thinking the same or similar thoughts. Those thoughts send out energy signatures and collide with and attract the same types of thoughts in the people involved.

It's an energy that, at its peak, can be 'felt' by those sensitive to mood. Haven't you ever walked into a room and instinctively could sense tension in the room, without even observing the occupants or knowing what had taken place in the room before you entered? Yes, some of this could possibly be attributed to reading body language or knowing inside information about the people in the room, but it is more likely than not that what you are experiencing is your brain picking up on the energy signatures that the thoughts and emotions of the people in the room had experienced before you entered.

Haven't you ever been in a great mood, but then perhaps you go to work or a family function and everyone else is upset or arguing? If you stay around that long enough, eventually, no matter how good of a mood you were in, your mood too will begin to change to reflect the energy of those around you.

When those thoughts that are negative in nature, angry, violent in some, just angry or frustrated in others, put out energy signatures that attract the like signatures of thought energy from the others who are close in proximity. Once that happens, the mood and thoughts of the people involved in the situation get stronger. As the thoughts and mood gets stronger, they release even stronger energy signatures, and that energy can be sensed and felt by those around it, and thus it gets even stronger. The cycle continues with the building of this negative thought energy, until one person who has some type of a violent tendency in them already, loses control and begins the mob reaction.

Then another will pick up the violent or destructive action, and that increases the negative thought energy, and this continues until most everyone involved in the now increasingly aggressive mob engage in what the sociologists call mob mentality.

Since many sociologists believe this to be true, the next thing that one must look at is how can knowing this about mob mentality help you in your daily life?

Good question!

Let's look at the world in which we live. We are inundated daily with negative - we live in a negatively geared world. The average newspaper has less than one page for marriage and birth announcements, perhaps a small lifestyle section, and then pages and pages of negative events that occurred. The new carnival in town might get a blurb mention on page four, but the school bus crash that killed two children will be plastered on the front page with color photos.

There is no expectation of praise for performing as expected in life or on the job, but there surely is counseling or reprimand when one doesn't perform as expected, now isn't there? We take the time, most of the time, to complain when service is bad or a store, restaurant or product doesn't perform as expected, but so few of us take the time to compliment those same venues or items when it does perform well or as expected.

The negativity is all around us, and therefore, when we have a negative thought or emotion, it's much easier for that energy to draw on or connect with or attract more negative energy. It's much easier to 'put someone in a bad mood' than it is to help build someone up into a good mood, after all.

We are human beings, and as such, we have the ability to choose how we want to think and feel about things. When we choose to feel happy about something, and I do mean really choose it, there is nothing in the world that can knock down that happiness, unless we give our permission to allow it.

Now, that doesn't always mean we knowingly give that permission, but when we let the negative energy creep in, the positive finds less and less to attract, and soon enough, the mood easily changes.

Good people have negative thoughts - it happens to us all. What we choose to do with those thoughts is more important than the thought itself.

Test yourself on this. During the course of an hour, just one hour, consciously become aware of the 'self-talk' that is always running inside your head that you know is there but rarely pay attention to. Take the time to force yourself to pay attention to it. When you read something, stop for a moment and focus on the thoughts you said inside your head when you read it. When someone calls on the phone, what is the first thing you think when you look at the caller ID?

When you stub your toe, do you call yourself stupid for not watching where you are going? When you forget to pick something up at the store, what ways do you use your negative energy to reprimand yourself?

If you were to become aware of your negative thoughts that run in your mind, you might just be surprised at just how many negative thoughts, and thus negative energy, you are putting out into the world.

The power of negative thinking is as strong and oftentimes stronger than the power of positive thinking, because it is so much easier in a negatively bent society to find negative things to attract that negative energy. Staying positive in a negative society is difficult, but it is not impossible.

If you want to change your negative thinking, simply force yourself to become more aware of your negative thoughts every day. Each time you catch yourself thinking something negative, stop that thought in its tracks, and replace that negative thought with three positive things in exchange. At first, it may seem you are stopping your day every few minutes to redirect a negative thought, but soon, those positive thoughts will start to come on their own, without trying, and the negative ones will be few and far between.

There is, after all, the need for negative thoughts. If there is a problem, it does need to be addressed. If you have a complaint, you have a right to take action to affect change. However, when you really focus on thinking less negatively and putting more focus on positive thoughts, you will find it improves your entire outlook on life, and some of those complaints or problems might not seem all that bad in light of your new positive outlook.

Negative thoughts are profoundly powerful, after all, it takes something pretty strong to make otherwise normal people resort to mob mentality situations. Knowing this, even though your negative thinking may not lead to a mob or raiding, can you see how it's possible that your negative thoughts truly are affecting your reality - the entire world around you - and that by changing those negative thoughts to more positive ones, you can't help but attract more positive things, and people, into your life?
