Boy's Job Appraisal

A little boy went into a drug store, grabbed a soda carton, and pulled it toward the telephone. He climbed onto the carton to reach the phone's buttons and then dialed a seven-digit phone number. The store-owner observed and listened to the conversation.

Boy: Lady' can you give me the job of cutting your lawn?

Woman: I already have someone to cut my lawn.

Boy: Lady' I will cut your lawn for half the price of the person who cuts your lawn now.

Woman: I'm very satisfied with the person who is presently cutting my lawn.

Boy (with more perseverance): Lady' I'll even sweep your curb and your sidewalk' so on Sunday you will have the prettiest lawn in all of Palm Beach' Florida.

Woman: No' thank you.

With a smile on his face, the little boy replaced the receiver.

The store owner' who was listening to all this' walked over to the boy.

Store Owner: Son' I like your attitude' I like that positive spirit and would like to offer you a job.

Boy: No thanks.

Store Owner: But you were really pleading for one.

Boy: No sir' I was just checking my performance at the job I already have. I am the one who is working for that lady I was talking to!

Moral: This is what we call 'Self Appraisal'. Every time if we don't get ahead of others' we blame others for it. We should look to ourselves and compare' find our own weaknesses and work hard to throw away weaknesses. Always work hard' honestly' and with full dedication. It will always pay off.

The shopkeeper was momentarily stunned. He hadn’t expected such maturity and self awareness from a little boy. Most children his age would be chasing toys or playing games' but this young boy was already thinking like a professional' focused not just on doing a task but doing it excellently.

The boy’s small act carried a big lesson: we don’t need applause or praise from others to know our worth we just need to reflect on our own efforts. Self appraisal means honestly asking ourselves: Am I doing my best? Can I improve? It’s not about competing with others' but about growing into the best version of ourselves.

In a world where people often seek shortcuts to success' the boy’s approach was refreshing. He didn’t ask anyone if he was good he went straight to the customer. He put himself in a challenging position' not to take someone’s job' but to test his own value in the eyes of the person he served.

This small incident is a powerful reminder that true professionalism doesn’t depend on age' status' or experience. It comes from dedication' honesty, and the courage to ask tough questions. Are we doing what we said we would? Are we maintaining high standards even when no one is watching?

Extended Moral: True success lies not just in working hard' but in regularly evaluating your performance with honesty and humility. Don’t wait for others to point out your flaws or praise your strengths. Be your own mirror. Be the kind of person who grows by improving every single day not to compete with others, but to become better than you were yesterday.
