"The purpose of meditation is to make our mind calm and peaceful. If our mind is peaceful, we will be free from worries and mental discomfort, and so we will experience true happiness. But if our mind is not peaceful, we will find it very difficult to be happy, even if we are living in the very best conditions."

I never was a believer in meditation, probably because I never really understood it. I just thought it was nothing more than some form of religious act, but then again, I was always very naïve. Having spoken with a medical professional earlier on the year, after I entered into a time of severe depression, they advised me to give meditation a go, to try and help me with my mindset. They referred me to a certain meditation app, which I wasn't exactly that inspired about trying out, but I'm sure glad I did. When we think of vital organs within the body, we think of the heart, the liver, the kidneys, the lungs, the pancreas, and so forth, but let's focus on the brain for a minute here, because that contains one of the most important components of our body, which happens to determine our destiny. I'm talking, of course, about the mind. The mind is what determines our thoughts, our feelings, our decisions, our actions, our mood, our behaviour, our attitude, our beliefs, and our emotions. It's from the effective and productive use of our mind that we can guide ourselves towards success, happiness, and prosperity, but when we fail to use it in such a manner, we can often find ourselves living a life void of such blessings, satisfaction, and fulfilment. We allow the stresses and worries of everyday life to overwhelm us. The unfortunate truth here is that most people don't use their mind effectively and productively. It's not that they don't want happiness, success, and prosperity, quite the opposite actually, but they just lack the ability to control their mind. Their minds are filled up with destructive thoughts, beliefs, and behaviours, all because they allow others to easily influence and manipulate them. They become too focused on pleasing others, and trying hard to make others like them, when all the while they are sacrificing a life of happiness and success in the process.

So where does meditation come into all of this? Well firstly, there are two best practices to helping us with our mindset, and gaining control over it, to create positive and productive thoughts and beliefs. The first best practice is personal development training. We should be engaging in at least 30 to 60 minutes of personal development training each and every day, whether that be through listening to inspiring podcasts, reading motivational books, indulging in personal development courses, or perhaps watching short motivational videos. Many people believe that personal development is all about physical training, but that only forms half of the program. We first need to strengthen our ability to control our thoughts, feelings, emotions, and beliefs, as this then assists us with the execution piece. When we continually expose ourselves to material that is designed to inspire us, motivate us, drive us, and encourage us to discover and reveal our true potential, and then put that theory into practice, we automatically begin increasing our probability of achieving success. We are continually exposing our mind to positivity, and that is invaluable to us in chasing our goals in life. So personal development is the first aspect to mindset training and control, and the second is meditation, of course.

How easy is it to become stressed and overwhelmed with everything that is going on in your life? It compounds even further when we are navigating our way through times of difficulty and adversity. It's how we respond to all that life throws at us that determines the results we achieve in life. If we allow our circumstances and certain events to overwhelm us, and then become negative minded, angry, frustrated, resentful, and bitter in the process, then all we have done is revealed the fragility of our mind. We have proven that we are weak minded. Don't feel too bad about that though, because you are in the same category as an overwhelming majority of people. What's more, mindset training and control takes several years to master, plus the fact we are human after all, and it's not easy just to switch off our feelings and emotions. It's about mental strength though, slowly getting better in dealing with these feelings and emotions more maturely and wisely. What we need is more calmness. We want to get in the habit of responding to circumstances, rather than reacting to them, because when we react, we don't think as clearly. We let our emotions take over, and that can often be a bad thing. That's where meditation can help. When we pause for 30 minutes, maybe even just as little as 5 minutes, each day, and place ourselves in a quiet and peaceful environment, with no interruptions or distractions, we can help our mind to process things a lot better. We can hone in our awareness, and accept our circumstances, and all the stresses and challenges that life is dealing us, but then draw our attention back to that very present moment, and understand that we are in a room safe, alive, and breathing. It's a moment where we can just forget about all the troubles on our mind, and just allow ourselves to relax.

Meditation isn't an escape route for our troubles and dramas, by any means. It is an outlet in which we can detox our mind basically. We can just relieve it from all the stress, pressure, and worries of life, even if it is just for a few short minutes. It's just as valuable as sleep and exercise are to the body. Think about how you feel after you have done a good workout at the gym, or after you've just had a really good sleep. You feel rejuvenated, refreshed, and energized. Meditation works in the same manner for our mind. Just those few minutes to destress ourselves makes us feel a lot better thereafter. We can't avoid returning back to reality after that short period of meditation, but we at least come back to it with a clearer mind. We can then work on whatever decisions we need to make, or actions we need to take, that will either overcome the adversities we are dealing with, and/or work on the actions that are leading towards achieving our goals. It's like having that wonderful first cup of coffee on a Monday morning. You feel so much better after it! Meditation doesn't have to be about sitting in the lotus position, with your legs crossed and palms facing upwards, it's about being relaxed, still, and quiet for a few minutes, to allow your mind to process some thoughts and feelings, and then feel a sense of peace and calmness. If you've never tried it, today's a good a time as any. Give your mind the break it deserves each day. Here are ten quotes to encourage you into the habit of daily meditation.
