get success and goals in 30 min easily it is possible?
Every day I learn something new or deepen my knowledge of life, either by reading books or having experiences. I'm not here to lecture anyone. I'm simply sharing for myself first, to reinforce my learning, and second, to help anyone who might benefit from this knowledge.
It would seem that being able to wait for a reward is one of the most reliable predictors of future success. Perhaps the best-known study is Mischel's Marshmallow Test, in which a child who can wait 15 minutes for a treat without eating it receives a double reward.
Everyone seems to agree that the keys to success are discipline and willpower.
It's all very nice. The problem is when that advice is misinterpreted.
Hedonism or misery?
Most people have mediocre jobs that they don't thrive in for decades. Others torture themselves in the gym or go for a run every morning in the cold. They follow a strict, bland diet for weeks or even months, feeling unhappy throughout the process. It's absurd.
And to tell you the truth, I took part in all that. Getting up at 5 a.m., charcoaling for more than 12 hours a day. Running until total exhaustion, doing bodybuilding, reading boring books until the end… After all, you have to suffer to be beautiful. No Pain, No Gain, right? To be honest not really. The pleasure must also be there, in addition to the pain. If you feel miserable all the time, you will eventually give up. Relying on will alone for long periods is the best way to kill passion, joy, or pleasure.
Naturally, instant gratification isn't the answer either. But not everything has to be black or white.
There is a happy medium: set yourself small challenges
All you have to do is consider the second-order consequences of your actions, and ignore the pleasure of instant gratification. You don't need a lot of willpower. Just choose what will make you happy, not now, not in a month, but in thirty minutes. And for that, challenge yourself.
It's short. It's not difficult. I give you some examples:
Goal Instant Gratification Discipline and will Engaging challenge
(immediate pleasure) (long efforts) (nice little effort)
Get in shape Eat those crisps. Follow a rigorous diet for 3 months. Go for a walk, or do push-ups. Then eat those chips. Or not.
Get to work Watch an episode of The Office. Work for 6 hours straight. Tackle the most interesting part of his job for 15 minutes and see where it leads.
Acquire a skill View motivational blog posts / watch videos on YouTube. Finish 3 books and 2 years of learning. Do a small concrete and fun task that calls on the target skill.
Get up early Sleep until 11 a.m. Wake up at 5 a.m. Get up at 8 a.m. Take a nap in the afternoon, if necessary.
Giving in to instant gratification allows you to have immediate pleasure, but it only delays effort, pain, or discomfort. It enjoys now and pays later.
In contrast, long-term gratification involves dealing with difficulties right away. And feel miserable for a long time. Hoping, with a bit of luck, to benefit from it later, if you don't give up in the meantime. Which, unfortunately, often happens.
But set yourself a short and engaging little challenge. No need to have a superhuman will. And we are still moving forward.
We must not look for the easy way or the shortcuts. Nor force yourself to follow a long and tortuous path. Just challenge yourself and have fun.
