Seven Habits of Spiritually Mature Leaders

How Embracing a Deeper Sense of Purpose, Values and Ethics Can Transform Business Success

By Mariette Du PlessisPublished 4 years ago • 3 min read

In today's complex and rapidly changing business world, leaders must have a unique set of qualities to thrive. One of the most critical, yet often overlooked, of these qualities is spiritual maturity.

Spiritual maturity encompasses a deep understanding of one's purpose, values, and ethical principles. It allows leaders to navigate complex decisions with grace, empathy, and wisdom. In a business context, this means they are able to maintain their composure, balance their priorities, and lead with integrity.

In 2023, the role of leaders has become increasingly challenging due to the pressures of a volatile economic environment, the accelerating pace of technological change, and the growing need for organizations to prioritize social and environmental responsibility. As a result, leaders who possess spiritual maturity are better equipped to handle these challenges and emerge as effective and successful.

Moreover, spiritual maturity helps leaders foster a culture of trust, respect, and collaboration within their organization. It enables them to build high-performing teams, foster collaboration, and create a sense of belonging among employees. This, in turn, leads to greater employee engagement, increased productivity, and higher levels of innovation.

It also helps leaders better understand their own strengths and limitations, and this self-awareness can help them to lead with a more authentic voice. This can result in a more transparent, honest, and effective leadership style, which leads to increased trust and respect among stakeholders.

From an employee's perspective, when the chief executive of the organization leads by example, demonstrating integrity and compassion, and promoting open communication, this is bound to lead to increased job satisfaction and employee morale. Additionally, a leader who prioritizes spiritual growth is more likely to approach decision-making with empathy and wisdom, which can help to create a more harmonious workplace and reduce conflict.

Of course, leaders who prioritize spiritual growth also tend to approach decision-making from a broader perspective, considering the long-term impact of their actions on the planet and all of its inhabitants. This can lead to policies and initiatives that prioritize environmental conservation and protection, as well as equitable distribution of resources. Additionally, a spiritually mature leader can inspire others to adopt sustainable practices and advocate for systemic change to create a more just and sustainable future.

At the start of another year, my advice for the next generation of business leadership is to embrace the 7 Habits of Spiritually Mature Leaders:

  1. Prioritize values: Establish a clear set of values that guide decision-making and company culture, such as ethics, transparency, and empathy.
  2. Encourage personal growth: Encourage and support personal growth and self-improvement among employees, such as through meditation, yoga, or other mindfulness practices.
  3. Foster a positive work culture: Create a work environment that prioritizes positivity, kindness, and inclusiveness, which can help to reduce stress and foster a sense of community.
  4. Consider the impact of your actions: Consider the long-term impact of your business practices on the environment, community, and other stakeholders, and strive to make choices that promote sustainability and social responsibility.
  5. Seek guidance: Seek out mentors, advisors, or spiritual leaders who can provide guidance and support on your journey towards spiritual maturity.
  6. Practice gratitude: Encourage a culture of gratitude by recognizing and appreciating the contributions of employees, customers, and other stakeholders.
  7. Lead by example: Model the values and practices you wish to see in your company by setting an example of ethical behavior and spiritual growth.

The bottom-line? As the business world continues to evolve, leaders with a strong sense of spiritual maturity will be the ones who lead their organizations to success. They are the leaders who will be able to navigate complex challenges, foster a culture of trust and respect, and lead with integrity and authenticity.
