If I could only choose one word to describe Regina King, I would say POWERFUL. On-screen certainly. The Leftovers (2014-2017 on HBO) is my number one favourite tv show and in it, Regina King exudes strength. Not only through her physical appearance but in her words, emotions, and actions. The same goes for her role in Seven Seconds (2018 on Netflix). Then, when I found out she was going to be the star actress in Watchmen (2019 on HBO) the tv show I could not wait to see her again.

Watchmen the graphic novel is highly celebrated in its own right and is one of the best-selling graphic novels ever published. The film adaptation was intense and the tv show capitalizes on that tension through its dark atmosphere, action cut scenes, and fantastic soundtrack. Regina King plays Angela Abar aka Sister Night. Mother, wife, cop, SUPERHERO. Not to mention complete badass. While the show itself went out with a whimper rather than the bang I was hoping for it was still an emotional ride worth getting on.

In an interview, Regina King said that dark, make you think stories are very attractive to her which happens to be just my kind of genre. The Leftovers leads to many questions about faith and building your own “definition of family” which is just what Regina has done in her personal life as well. She thinks space is good for a relationship and that being married with different houses would be ideal. This is something I can relate to--define your own family, love your career and live in your own damn house if that is what you want to do.

Regina started her career in 1985. She’s been in Jerry Maguire (1996), Enemy of the State (1998), and Ray (2004). She played Latrice Butler in a tv mini-series on Netflix called Seven Seconds (2018). Another dark, make you think story that shines a bright spotlight on systemic racism in America.

I haven’t seen her movie One Night in Miami (2020) yet, but it is certainly something I am looking forward to. If you don't already know the film is a fictional account of a night where Muhammad Ali, Malcolm X, Sam Cooke, and Jim Brown gathered together to discuss their roles in the civil rights movement. Regina spoke of how she was surprised that she had only ever thought of these men as heroes and had not thought about their humanness until reading the script for the film. It’s about showing vulnerability through strength she said. This was her first time directing a movie and at the 2021 Golden Globe awards she was nominated for best director. The second time a black woman was nominated. All together she has been nominated 54 times for awards and won 56. Here’s hoping for many more Regina King!

Plus, she looked stunning for the first virtual Golden Globe Awards.

When speaking of her career she has this to say:

“I have no regrets. Everything was exactly what it was supposed to be... I appreciate my career. Nothing but gratitude.”

Some final words of wisdom from Regina:

“For those people that say I want to be just like Regina. You want to be just like you.”

Thank you Regina. Keep being just like you.

Quotes were pulled from multiple interviews including Regina King On Surviving Divorce, Possibility of Re-marrying & Raising A Teenaged Son – Renata is the host of Ear Candy Mornings and just generally pleasant to listen to, I recommend listening to more of her. Regina King “Feels a True Shift” for Female Filmmakers, Regina King on Winning an Oscar, Trip to Italy & Watchmen, Regina King on Trump Riots at the Capitol, Meeting Tupac & One Night in Miami and "Watchmen" Star Regina King Reacts To Her Most Iconic Roles.
