Once Upon a Time

Life is like a river

By RadhikaPublished about a year ago • 2 min read

**Once Upon a Time** There was a man who was deeply troubled by his life. From childhood, his life had been filled with problems. His father passed away when he was very young, leaving the responsibility of his mother and younger siblings on his shoulders. At a tender age, the burdens of the entire household fell upon him. When he got married, he thought life would improve. But instead, his troubles only grew. As one problem ended, another would begin. It felt as though peace was forever out of his reach. One day, he went to a sage and said, “Gurudev, I want to renounce the world and become your disciple. I’m exhausted by these never-ending troubles. I seek peace.” The sage replied, “Very well, you can become my disciple. But first, tell me, what troubles you the most?” The man said, “Gurudev, my life is full of problems. Sometimes it’s financial struggles, sometimes fights with my wife, sometimes issues at work, or something else. One problem follows another. I never succeed. I always feel worried, sad, and tired.” The sage said, “Alright. For now, stay at my ashram.” The next morning, the sage said, “Come, we must go to the nearby village.” They set out together. On the way, they came across a river. The sage said, “We need to cross this river.” But the current was strong. The man stood there, waiting. After a while, he asked, “Gurudev, you said we need to cross the river, so why are we standing here?” The sage smiled and said, “We’re waiting for the river to dry up. Then we’ll cross.” The man was shocked. He said, “Gurudev, how is that possible? The river won’t dry up on its own. If we keep waiting, we’ll never cross. We must try to cross it, no matter how difficult it is.” The sage smiled again and said, “That’s exactly what I wanted to teach you. Life is like this river, and its problems are like the flowing water. They will always be there. If you wait for all your problems to vanish before moving forward, you’ll never progress. You must cross them, no matter how hard it is.” Then, looking at the man, the sage said, “My friend, running away from the world won’t end your problems. That’s like waiting for the river to dry up. Even if you take up sannyasa, problems will persist in some form. “Go back home. Don’t give up. Face your challenges. That’s the way to move forward.” The man understood the sage’s words. That single lesson changed his perspective. He made a firm resolve—he would no longer wait for a perfect life. From that day on, he began facing life’s challenges with courage, and slowly, things started to improve. **This story teaches us an important lesson:** Problems are a part of everyone’s life. Some struggle with financial difficulties, others with family conflicts, illnesses, or inner turmoil. We often think, “If just this one problem is solved, everything will be fine.” But the truth is, when one problem ends, another arises. If we keep waiting for a time when everything is perfect, our entire life will pass in waiting. It’s like waiting for a flowing river to dry up. So, we must not stop or run away. Instead, we must face our problems and keep moving forward. Every challenge makes us stronger and teaches us something new. **So, instead of fearing problems, learn to fight them.** Success and peace don’t come when life becomes easy. They come when we keep moving forward despite the difficulties. **So don’t stop, don’t give up—just keep going. In the end, you will surely succeed.**
