John's parents and teachers tried to be patient and encouraging, but he could sense their disappointment.

Now here John was, a freshman in college, faced with yet another empty page he couldn't fill. The professor had given them the weekend to draft the story, but John procrastinated until Sunday night. The cursor just blinked mockingly, like a heartbeat slowly dying.

John's fingers rested inert on the keys. He glanced around his dorm room as if hoping a feel-good headline would leap out at him. The walls were bare, save for a calendar his mom had mailed him. It was open to the current month, with a famous motivational quote written across each day.

John smiled as he pressed print. Tomorrow he would turn in his story, but his real accomplishment was not the grade or the accolades from his professor. It was the knowledge that he had finally written while the heat was in him, and felt his spark catch fire.
