In a world where we are constantly surrounded by fear, it can be hard to keep hope alive. It is easy for people to lose their sense of optimism and take on the mentality that things will never change. I have also been one of those people who lose hope easily and that is because we usually focus on the negative aspects of our lives. However, this does not have to be the case! In order to maintain an optimistic outlook in today’s difficult environment, there are some steps you can take which we will discuss later.

What causes us to lose hope?

The answer is easy: fear. Fear of failure, fear of the unknown, fear of being forgotten. We all have it. The question is: How can we use that fear to our advantage?

Fear of failure: Most of us are scared of failure. We're scared that we'll try something and we won't be good at it, or that we'll put ourselves out there and get rejected. And sometimes, that fear is warranted-sometimes, failure does mean that we're not good at something or that our efforts were unsuccessful. But other times, failure is just a sign that we need to try again. It's okay to be scared of failure, but don't let that fear keep you from trying because the only way to overcome failure is to try again and again until you succeed. An important note to keep in mind is that we cannot succeed without failure as through it we learn how to become better individuals.

Fear of the unknown: We all fear the unknown to some extent. It's what keeps us up at night, makes our heart race, and sends a shiver down our spine. The unknown is unpredictable and uncontrollable, which can make it downright terrifying. But while it's natural to feel afraid of the unknown, we can't let that fear keep us from living our lives to the fullest. We have to face our fears and take chances in order to grow and learn new things. So don't be afraid of the unknown – embrace it! Jump into that new adventure with both feet and see what awaits you on the other side. You might just find that the unknown isn't so bad after all.

Fear of being forgotten: At some point in our lives, we've all felt the fear of being forgotten. It's a feeling that comes when we're not sure if we're important to someone or not. We start to doubt if we're worth keeping around and whether or not our time matters. And that's a scary feeling because it makes us feel powerless. But the thing is, we are never going to be forgotten. Someone somewhere cares about us and wants us around. We just have to find that person and remind ourselves that we matter. Because believe it or not, being forgotten isn't the worst thing in the world.

How to keep hope alive in our lives?

  • Identify the positive aspects of your life – even if they are small, insignificant, and seemingly irrelevant, they are still positive. The more you can identify the positive things going on in your life, the more hope you will feel.
  • Talk about how you feel with other people – There's something about talking about how you feel that just makes everything better, isn't there? Whether it's with a friend, a family member, or a therapist, talking openly and honestly about what's going on in your life is such a relief. And studies have shown that there are lots of benefits to doing so too! So if you're feeling down, struggling with anything, or just need someone to talk to, go ahead and reach out. You'll be glad you did.
  • Do what you love – After a long day at work, most people want to do is relax and enjoy some of their favorite activities. For some people that may mean reading a good book, for others it could be going out with friends or soaking in a hot tub. Whatever it is that puts you at ease and makes you happy, make sure to include it in your life on a regular basis.
  • Stay away from social media – Social media can be a breeding ground for comparison. It's easy to scroll through your News Feed and see all of the amazing things your friends are doing , while feeling like you're not achieving anything. But don't let social media make you feel bad about yourself! The truth is, most people only post their best moments on social media, so don't compare your behind-the-scenes to their highlight reel. Instead, focus on your own journey and remember that success takes time.

A hopeful message can be one of the most powerful tools in any person's arsenal. We are all human beings, and that means we are vulnerable to fear. When you feel threatened or uncertain about your future, it may seem hard to maintain hope for a better tomorrow. But if you take small steps every day towards achieving what is important to you, then even when things get tough at times - there will always be something worth fighting for ahead on the horizon.
