How to Be Confident

How to show your confidence, or at least fake it.

Confidence.

"The feeling or belief that one can have faith in or rely on someone or something."

Having confidence, or just overall being a confident person, can be the easiest thing for some people, but much more of a struggle for others.

So, in this post, I'll be showing you ways which show that you are a confident person—or at least show you ways you can fake being confident.

"Fake it until you make it," right?

Just know, if you physically cannot do any of these, please do not worry. Learn what works for you, or use other options to showcase your confidence instead.

Eye Contact

Making eye contact is an obvious point, but it can be difficult.

Not making eye contact gives the other person the thought that you aren't interested or confident, or that you'd rather be somewhere else.

Even if the latter is true, it's best to work on making eye contact with people, especially when it comes to meetings and interviews. Job opportunities are less likely to be successful if the employer sees that a potential employee can't even look at them during a conversation.

Posture

This won't apply to everybody, simply because there could be any number of health reasons which could make this one harder to do.

Slouching, sitting poorly, or in any way that isn't professional-like will badly affect the confidence you're trying to show. Not only that, you'll develop bad posture, which could lead to back problems.

Greetings

Meeting someone new in a professional or semi-professional environment? Always do your best to be the first to initiate a handshake.

A good handshake and initiating it can help show colleagues or visitors that you're a more confident person (or at least less shy than you think you may be). It's also a polite action in a more formal environment.

Clear Voice

A quiet and mumbling voice won't be heard. It's much easier to speak at a steady pace and a clear voice than being asked several times to repeat yourself.

Projection is key when talking to a group (or room full) of people. Use your diaphragm to make your voice louder (project, not shout); this is the easiest way to have your voice be loud and clear.

Affirmations

If you need to say a phrase over again to help you feel like you can be confident, then go for it. Have it written down nearby where you can see it, in a note on your phone, or even your lock screen.

Some ideas for confidence-related affirmations:

  • "I am confident"
  • "I am courageous"
  • "I will not fail"
  • "I decide and take action"
  • "I believe in myself and my ability to succeed"
  • "I am moving to become better"
  • "I am a success magnet"
  • "I am the architect of my own life"

You can also easily find affirmations online. Pinterest is filled with affirmations, so you can find as many as you like, and for whatever your need is, not just confidence.

Not everybody is instantly filled with confidence. Some are raised that way, some gain or even lose it through life experiences, and some have reasons which can cause this to be a struggle (an example would be social anxiety), but like most things in life, you can learn how to be confident like you would learn any other skill.

As stated above, there can be reasons why having confidence is a big struggle, and you should know that that's okay. Everyone moves at their own pace, so please, do what is best for you.
