How I built a music empire using Spotify

Within a year or so

By Moderateur WoolandPublished 3 years ago 3 min read

Turning 18 was like stepping into a whirlwind of social connections, compensating for the absence of siblings in my life.

The Spotify era dawned, transforming my buddy's cozy home studio into the epicenter of our musical escapades (it was mainly us playing around with Vocoder). Inspired by the rising tide of Spotify, we decided to catapult our dance tracks onto the platform.

However, navigating the complex world of distribution platforms was akin to traversing a labyrinth (I know this sounds very posh). That's when Distrokid, with its cool 5-artist deal, emerged as our golden ticket. Don’t get me wrong, the objective here wasn’t to become the next David Guetta, but more like throwing tens of songs each day hoping that one would catch.

As we continued churning out tunes, the elusive Spotify playlists loomed like Mount Everest on our musical journey (it was pretty much impossible to get listed anywhere lol). It got me thinking – if we, with our passion and dedication, faced such a struggle, how many other aspiring artists out there confronted the same daunting hurdle? And so, a plan was hatched. I conjured up a playlist, infused some cash into Instagram stories for that coveted follower boost, crossed the magic 10k mark, and voilà – my DMs were buzzing. But not with eager listeners; instead, they were flooded with fellow artists hungry for a spot on the playlist.

Recognizing an opportunity, I decided to monetize the demand. Charging a modest $20 per listing per week, the response was overwhelming (I used to get tens of Instagram DMs each day from aspiring artists), especially from artists flaunting connections to labels and agencies. Money started flowing in – $80 per artist per song per week became the new normal. Fast forward six months, and my humble playlist evolved into a network of 20, then 50, spanning various genres.

Crunching the numbers painted a picture of success – roughly $400 per playlist every month. It wasn't just about the money; it symbolized growth and progress. We expanded, bringing on board 20 talented individuals whose passion mirrored ours. Our business transcended the boundaries of playlist curation, and we found ourselves delving into diverse ventures, a testament to the power of creativity and entrepreneurship.

But the plot thickens – enter the realm of imagination within the same context. Picture this: a mythical creature named Melody Sprite, who would flutter around the playlists, sprinkling musical magic that enhanced the listening experience. Melody Sprite became the mascot of our venture, and artists would playfully mention hoping for a visit from the elusive sprite to elevate their tunes.

In this fantastical twist, DistroKid transformed into a benevolent musical genie, granting wishes to aspiring artists. The platform expanded its services not just practically but magically, with features like the Harmony Enhancer, a tool that magically added harmonies and depth to tracks.

Our company, now a vibrant musical empire, employed not just people but also musical fairies and tech wizards, creating an enchanting atmosphere where innovation and creativity thrived. DistroKid's influence extended beyond the mundane, with imaginary features like the Rhythm Resonator, a tool that tuned songs to the heartbeat of listeners, ensuring a deeper emotional connection.

In this whimsical world, the link provided invites you not just to witness but to step into the magical realm where creativity knows no bounds. It's a fantastical journey that started with making music with friends and transcended into a realm where imagination and reality dance hand in hand.

I hope my story would inspire others, and the most important thing I have learned so far is that : Opportunities are everywhere, you just need to spot them.

Take care ❤️
