Asian Adaptation and Cultural Transparency
Not all Eastern or Oriental works adapt well into Western features. Not all Western films do well in Asia though the "Titanic" broke box office records in Asia. Thus to reiterate, when Asian audiences experience and watch a Western film, the cultural standards of good and evil remain different and at times are difficult to understand for them.
These differences occur because the inner speech decodes the outer or cultural speech differently to use a Vygotskyan theory of language. "A word without meaning is an empty sound . . . "(212). Since everything is text, certain aspects from Western films do not translate at all for Asian audiences trying to read the visual cues.

Lev Vygotsky provides an explanation that can work to explain this reaction, "In our speech, there is always the hidden thought, the subtext" (251).
Hence, Asian audiences look within their own traditional narratives, within their own inner Eastern speech/text traditions to decode the messages from Western traditions, the outer Western cultural speech/text traditions.
An examination of Japanese narratives like ninja films by Western students will present problems of narrative transparency because of the heteroglossia a cultural speaking in tongue, that occurs when defining an Asian moral authenticity.
Buddhism, Shintoism and Taoism are not equal to a Judeo-Christian Approach to gnosis or ways of knowing.

Yagyu Sanma No Kurai: Ninjitsu Trinity of Knowing
To perfect ninjutsu or any martial learning, you much polish (ma) the three (san) levels (kurai): Yagyu Sanma No Kurai. Yagyu was a famous school of sword art, but this applies to ninja arts or any martial arts in Japan.

1. Narau (Narau) : LEVEL ONE
In the beginning level, where you learn from your teacher, you must pay attention and be respectful of what your teacher is sharing.
2. Kufu (Keiko): LEVEL TWO
In the middle level, where you work hard on what you have learned, you must practice and practice hard to understand the true value of what you have learned.
3. Neru (Kufu): LEVEL THREE
In the final level, where you work on perfecting your skills, you must spend years developing your practice into a mastery of skills.

Indeed, perfection means returning to the original beginning level and starting over, by reexamining what you learned by using the beginner's mind.
This rebirth into the original mandala of restarting is often told to students of kendo, the way of the sword, but it can apply to learning anything.

Sanma no-kurai. Learning to Learn
When I taught a class on Ninja Cinema and Literature, I explained that my notes and lectures are my voice as a teacher.
- Listen to them (narau) and work on applying the ideas (kufu).
- In time, try to master the notes (neru), while decoding the inner voices of your own American culture.
- Ultimately, you end up where you started, so learn to learn and uncode and be reborn as a ninja, like Naruto, the most famous anime ninja, the fox spirit with nine tails.
Explore these tales and relearn to learn. You are responsible for teaching yourself, so be mindful and delight in the new gnosis of appreciation and excitement. For learning is refreshing if you meditate and become enlightened. Welcome to learning to learn.

The journey of life is unending, so you can always learn more. At all three levels, watching (miru geiko) is vital for success. Watch the watcher seeing and uncovering more and more and more.
Welcome to learning to learn. Thank you so much! I grew up in Japan and came to America as a child. I have been learning to learn all my life. Such is life.
