2020 was a year for the history books, and it took a toll on everyone who participated. In it, we discovered who we are, what we are made of, and how we would respond when faced with crisis. But perhaps the worst discovery for humanity all across the globe was the feeling of isolation.
Millions of people around the globe experienced the dilemma to either risk the safety of their loved ones or to self-quarantine and stay home alone. Thousands of businesses had to shut their doors and had no choice but to keep the doors closed permanently.
For me, isolation was worse for my health than any other illness I had ever faced. I gained over 50 pounds within the year, my emotional state felt shattered, my mental abilities felt overwhelmed and extremely fragile. My body and mind ached with constant anxiety and fear. When looking back at 2020, and how I responded to crisis, I realize now that I was not prepared. I was not strong in the areas of my life or habits that I needed to be.
I was not alone, as thousands of other Americans had been diagnosed with depression and have felt the effects of COVID through more than just isolation. Family had to be separated from family, with no promise to be able to reunite or embrace before the holidays. Work was moved online to be done remotely, with no daily in person interactions by the coffee pot to keep our spirits up.
In 2021 we have been given a glance at a near future with not only a vaccine, but a promise of fellowship and community once again. But more importantly, in 2021 we have been given a new chance to prepare ourselves, our habits, our goals, and our futures for any future uncertainties our world gives us.
As the saying goes, what does not break us makes us stronger. And, I think, also makes us wiser. Is it possible that 2020, however terrible it may have been, could ultimately be a great gift to us and our nation? In 2020 we learned the importance of healthy living, and how we cannot take our own health or life for granted. We learned how dear relationships are to have in life, and how priceless a hug from our loved ones is.
This year, in 2021 my focus will be about creating a healthy life, for present and future. Living a healthy life is about balance. And to be healthy you must focus on more than just your body. Healthy living includes focusing on improving the health of your body, mind, emotions, finances, spirituality (if applicable), habits, work life, relationships, and self-image.
This year in 2021 I encourage you to embrace a healthy lifestyle, whatever that means for you where you are right now. Go for a walk in your local park or walking trail and enjoy the breeze across your face or through your hair. Commit to working out, and then actually follow through. Eat better choices, but don’t forget to reward yourself with your favorite carbs or deserts when able. Help your community by volunteering to help those in need and showing them that you care. Make a plan financially and stick to it. Budgets will help you reach your dreams faster! And most importantly, reach out to those you love.
We only get one life, and it is a beautiful gift. If 2020 taught us anything it is that we should cherish the one chance we are given to equally embrace all the world has to offer while equally contributing to it.
