Health Is The Real Wealth

"It is health that is real wealth and not pieces of gold and silver." - Mahatma Gandhi

I personally know of numerous people who bust their butt off for their job or business, working long hours, and who average around just 5 of sleep each night. They basically leave at the crack of dawn, and don't return home around 6pm-7pm, time enough for dinner, a shower, and at least a couple of hours with their family, before bedtime. As it is, some still come home to do more work. One particular friend has always stood by his motto of working hard and maximizing the hours he has awake, and then he can sleep when he's dead. I'm sure a lot of people around the world live life in the same manner, especially entrepreneurs and executives, who work their bum off to build profits for their respective businesses, yet sacrifice their sleep in the process, likely also family time. With the time spent within their business, another activity that often goes by the wayside, is exercise. With their stream of income on the line, the importance of creating profits is absolutely crucial, hence why they believe they need to work long hours, and sacrifice other aspects of life, because it's money they rely on, and what they believe determines their survival and enhances their future. Those who work in corporate jobs aren't much better either. Many people work long hours, and even work overtime unpaid, to remove any potential they may possibly be dismissed off the back of not meeting the company's requirements, and losing their income source altogether. Let's be honest, no matter what work we do, many of us place so much emphasis on, and prioritize any actions, that are income producing, or to do with money. We do it to ensure we have food on the table, to ensure we have a roof over our head, and to ensure we have some funds left over to live some sort of quality of life. At what cost though, are we doing so?

Such is our hunger and desperation for money, so many of us have forgotten about something far more important, something in which money can easily become worthless to us anyway, and that is our health. Whilst we are working our arse off to create an income for ourselves, we are failing to achieve the amount of sleep required to effectively recharge our mind and body, we are failing to achieve the minimum 30 minutes intense exercise our body requires to keep fit, we can be guilty of working during our meal breaks, denying our minds much needed mental breaks, we can also be guilty of maintaining a poor diet, eating more fast food, due to a lack of time to cook and prepare meals, and many of us are even overwhelmed with stress and anxiety due to the need to get the work done, and to create profits. All these negatives lead us to long term health issues, and more times than not, premature death. It's interesting that a lack of exercise, a lack of sleep, and stress, all lead to the same health issues, with increased potential for high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, heart attack, obesity, stroke, and immunity impairment. Whilst we believe that money is the key to enhancing our future, improving our quality of life, and ensuring we are being adequately provided for, we are in fact destroying our quality of life and hastening our journey to the grave as a result. What's the point in striving for wealth, when we are either going to become too ill to enjoy the rewards money can buy, spending it all on medical bills anyway, or not even around long enough to enjoy the rewards also, as we will be six feet under? Money is not the real wealth, like people opt to believe it is, health is the real wealth.

Yes we should be working hard, yes we should be dedicated and committed to our job or business, and yes we should be applying ourselves wholeheartedly to it, but as far as our priorities are concerned, it's should be far from the highest on the list. Our number one priority is our health, closely followed by our happiness, well being, our goals, and our family. If our decisions and actions aren't focused on these five priorities, our life and our future is going to be far from quality, and lengthy for that matter. Life is about balance, equally shared between work, rest, and leisure. If we are not achieving this balance, then we are not being either proactive, nor creative enough. There are more efficient and effective ways to earn a sufficient income, whilst still being able to achieve enough sleep, have ample time for exercise, and get to spend quality time with our family. That's up to each one of us to find that solution, however you cannot find a solution if you don't invest the time to devise one. Your loved ones want you to be around as long as possible, not be jumping up and down in excitement at the prospect that your funeral may not be too far away, so your health also has an impact on others, remember that! Perhaps the time has come to take a decent look at your lifestyle, and examine exactly what your priorities truly are in life, and where you are directing your greatest focus to? If your decisions and actions are revolving around the belief that money is what creates wealth in life, I can only wish you all the best in dealing with your health issues as you continue to age, and pray that you still get time to enjoy the fruits of your labor. Health is the real wealth in life, and for those who have recognized this as fact, I commend and congratulate you on taking care of yourself, and that you are working hard to ensure your longevity, and adequate time to really enjoy life.
