Imagine a moment where you are anxious, frustrated, afraid, angry, or heartbroken. These are the feelings that none of us wants to feel very often because these feelings make us uncomfortable. While it's not possible to completely stop these types of moments in your life, but some people have a very unique ability to understand what's going on in their head and control their emotions and thoughts about that specific emotion.

Here are some common characteristics that mentally strong people have.

They Are Emotionally Intelligent

When it comes to mental strength, Emotional intelligence plays a vital role. You cannot become a mentally strong person unless you become an emotionally intelligent person and do something productive and useful with your emotions.

Moments that test your mental resilience are ultimately testing your emotional intelligence (EQ).

The good thing I that your EQ or Emotional Intelligence is flexible and you can learn and improve your EQ as well. It has been said that over 80% of top performers have high EQs than average people. And according to Forbes magazine people with high EQs can earn $28,000 more annually than those who have average or low EQs.

TalentSmart has tested more than a million people, but unfortunately, they found that 74% of the people were unable to accurately identify their emotions as they happen. Only 36% of the tested subjects have above-average EQ rates.

They Confront Toxic People

Dealing with toxic people could be exhausted and difficult for most people. Mentally strong people control their emotions towards toxic people and they confront them. When confronting a toxic person, they address the situation in a rational way.

They don't allow frustration and anger to blow up and fuel the chaos. When things get hard, they always look for solutions to their situational problems and are able to avoid any negativity and toxicity in their minds

They Have a Proactive Mentality

Becoming proactive means taking ownership of your own life. It means starting your days with purpose and a goal and taking 100% responsibility for their results.

"Watch your thoughts; they become words. Watch your words; they become actions. Watch your actions; they become habits. Watch your habits; they become character. Watch your character; it becomes your destiny." (Lao Tzu)

They have a very different approach to their life goals. Is there a will? Is there a way? What do you want from your life and what are you doing to make it happen? Asking questions like these can force your mind to think proactively.

They Move Fast

If there is a thing in their lives which they can't control they let that go. Mentally strong people let things go faster. If there is a toxic relationship, a friendship that is holding them back, a bad habit, or any other thing that they have no control over, they let them go.

If there is a weight that is holding you from standing tall if there is a person who is holding you from soaring if there is an environmental force that is holding you from shining let the bad things go.

"Incredible change happens in your life when you decide to take control of what you do have power over instead of craving control over what you don't." (Steve Maraboli).

They Don't Allow Anyone To Limite Their Joy

When your focus, senses of pleasure are derived to compare yourself to others, then you are not the master of your happiness and you are in a weak mentality. Mentally strong people seek and do something good that they would be proud of. They don't compare and never let anyone steal that joy from them.

It's true that you cannot stop thinking about what others think of you, but one thing that you can control is your thoughts about it. It's okay to listen to others, discuss and take other's opinions at some points but never allow them to stop you from doing something that they aren't capable of, and don't allow them to limit your happiness.

They Don't Limite The Joy Of Others

While limiting others to control your happiness and joy it's also true that mentally strong people will never stop others to enjoy their moments. Because they know that everyone has something unique to offer and they don't judge others.

Comparison and jealousy are something that can only found in weak mentalities. Mentally strong people have more important things to do in life than focusing on others.

Instead of wasting your time and energy on jealousy and comparison, appreciate others and lift them up. When you celebrate the success of others, they will celebrate your success as well.

Conclusion

These characteristics aren't completed. We can go on and on, it could get longer than 100 pages and it's not possible to add all of those here in a single story. But these are the most common and major characteristics of mentally strong people, that you can adapt and learn about.

Mental strength is as rare as it is important. But the good news is that it's a practicable and learnable skill. And any of us can learn and master the skills that are required to be a mentally strong person.

And I'm leaving you with the legendary words of Christopher Ruben, Hope you'll get the idea:

"Physically Strong Person Can Win a Fight, Mentally Strong Person Can Win a War."
