Even Titans Need To Rest

You earned it.

You and I fight arduous battles every single day, my friends.

Don’t be fooled into thinking this is some sort of punishment cast upon us by the universe.

On the contrary, these battles are great opportunities to prove just what incredible human beings we are. Everything you have experienced up to this point supports this fact; because you're still here.

You’ve probably suffered through fistfights, arguments with family, or maybe just listening to children screaming non-stop. You probably face angry bosses, angry spouses, or just angry people every 15 minutes. On top of every other personal battle you wage, it seems like the world around you is one word away from crumbling, doesn't it?

Today is no exception; tomorrow won’t be any different.

Sounds grim, but look at it this way: every single small victory you’ve ever encountered has somehow led you here to this sentence.

You’re here for a reason and this is your checkpoint. Fair enough? Well, let me sweeten the deal.

First, I want to salute your bravery and the strength you possess to face each daily trial. Secondly, I want to remind you that you’re allowed to set the world down for a moment. Why? Because you owe it to yourself and the people who depend on you for survival to reset, recharge and reclaim your power.

Now, I know the year has barely begun, so it’s no time to get too comfortable. So what I bring today are two strategies that I’m enforcing this year and every year that follows.

May they serve you in daily battle as much as they continue to serve me.

Now, repeat after me. This year, I pledge to:

1. Keep Still

Tough, I know. We’ll always see, hear, or feel something that will beg for our immediate input. Depending on your lifestyle, this approach might seem somewhat impractical and radical. To keep still, we need not lie in bed all day and do absolutely nothing. Resting and stillness aren’t limited to inactivity.

In fact, we can continue to be productive, only with fewer unnecessary reactions to things that are already being solved or can sort themselves out. By doing this, we can conserve our energy for events that truly require it.

Think of it this way: is it useful to curse a change of weather? It’s not going to change back just because it ruined something you planned. So what’s the point of spending your breath on it? What good does it do to yell inside your car at another driver who cuts you off on the road? Not only does the fact remain unaltered, but they can’t hear you.

It’s wasted energy, and we won’t be perpetuating this bad habit any longer.

What we’re striving for by keeping still is reminding ourselves that we can't control everything. So instead of rushing to take a fighting stance at the drop of a hat, first take a knee. Give yourself one extra minute to process what’s really happening. Then, if it still seems worth it, consciously act upon it.

Conservation of energy is a form of rest. Simple.

2. Be Compassionate

It’s true we all fight hard battles, but not everything or everyone is out to do us harm. What does this have to do with “resting”? Well, if keeping still brings us rest, compassion allows us to gift some of that rest back to others.

What good is being strong if you can’t also be strong for others?

This is a prime moment to share the energy you saved by practicing stillness before. Remember all that stress, fear, and intolerance you faced and gave zero of your power to? Great, now use that power to be the light in someone else’s darkness. This means being just a little more open and vulnerable. Not too much to become a target, but just enough to close the gap.

Remember the last time someone complimented your outfit? Or said something to make you laugh without you expecting it? Being compassionate doesn’t have to be a grand display that needs to be broadcast.

All it takes are small acts of kindness to lighten someone’s unseen burdens. We have to be on the lookout for our fellow warriors if we get the opportunity to do so and if we have the strength to spare.

Because guess what: by bringing about peace to people who may need it, you bring peace to yourself. Peace can be healing, and healing is also a form of rest.

Got it? Good.

Now go forth and do great things.
