What I learned from reading "The Secret" and my experiences after using and applying it to certain aspects in my life.

As society continues to evolve so does the way we see ourselves and others. It always seems like that person you've been stalking on Instagram has a much better life than you do. I used to always be so upset because good things were happening to other people and nothing good ever seemed to happen to me. This constant feeling of not being good enough can lead you down a very negative and dark path, I will be the first one to hold my hands up and say I used to be one of those people.

"The Secret" by Rhonda Byrne, has become extremely popular so you may have already read it by now. The book claims to help the reader "understand the hidden, untapped power that's within you, and this revelation can bring joy to every aspect of your life." It will do this by teaching you how to use The Secret in all aspects of your life such as your relationships, your finances, your health and your own happiness. It is said that the Secret is actually centuries old and has been found in religions, literature and philosophies throughout the years.

"As soon as you learn The Secret, you will come to know how you can have, be, or do anything you want. You will come to know who you really are. You will come to know the true magnificence that awaits you in life." - From the introduction of The Secret.

I read so many stories about how people used The Secret and that it had changed their lives, so naturally curiosity took over and I bought a copy for myself to see what all the fuss is about. I would say to anyone that starts reading it to not be discouraged if you don't find it to be a page turner, I view The Secret as being something to study and practice bit by bit instead of reading the whole thing in a day like you would with a good thriller or romantic novel. As Matshona Dhilwayo said “Great things take time; that is why seeds persevere through rocks and dirt to bloom.”

"So what is exactly is The Secret?" I hear you ask, The Secret is The Law of Attraction.

By definition the law of attraction is "The belief that the universe creates and provides for you that which your thoughts are focused on. It is believed by many to be a universal law by which “Like always attracts like.” The results of positive thoughts are always positive consequences. The same holds true for negative thoughts, always leading to bad outcomes. - A quote from Neil Farber (M.D, PH.D, CLC, CPD) for Psychology Today.

Quick disclaimer - if you wake up one morning and say " I want to be rich and have all these nice expensive things" all the wealth you asked for isn't going to just magically appear in front of you, even though I wish that was true unfortunately it is not, you may one day end up with all these things but it will take time.

I would say my experience using The Secret had a pretty positive outcome, when I first got this book I was nearing the end of my final year at university so it seemed like the perfect time to start asking the universe for what I wanted.

There are three steps you need to follow when you begin using The Secret;

1. ASK

The book provides an in-depth detailed description of the above three steps, but to summarise you can actually ask for anything you want, in my case I asked to get a graduate job straight after I finished university, I had been applying for loads of graduate schemes and other jobs before I learned about The Secret but I was always unsuccessful. I was also looking for a new flat but couldn't find any that I liked, so I asked to find myself the perfect flat. What you need to remember is, is that you need to be very specific when asking for what you want. For example when i asked for a new job right after uni, i was very clear on the sort of sectory i wanted to work in, i did the same when asking for my new flat, even what seems like the tiniest detail can make all the difference. I asked for a quiet location, with big windows with beautiful naturistic views. I then imagened what it would feel like having both of these things already - in my head i envisioned myself already having them, and then by the time i had finished my last uni exam i had found a flat that looked just like the one i had imagined and i got an offer for a job in the sector i had specified. I asked for what i wanted, I believed it was already mine and then I recieved what i asked for.

So in conclusion I would say that yes The Secret does work, as long as you manifest and already believe you have what you have asked for, whether it be in meditation or when you're out walking your dog or doing the shopping. It will eventually become a reality.

Even though I have read the whole book I still find myself going back and re-reading different chapters to get some advice or when I feel like I need a refresher course on The Secret. Like I said earlier, The Secret is something that you should study and practice, it takes time but it is effective.

"See the things that you want as already yours. Know that they will come to you at need. Then let them come. Don't fret and worry about them. Don't think about your lack of them. Think of them as yours, as belonging to you, as already in your possession." - A quote in the book by Robert Collier (1885-1950.)

The Secret is available in book stores and online at places like Amazon, eBay etc.
