How many calories should you consume per day?
Eating less calories than you burn is the best way to lose weight. The first step is knowing how many calories your body burns on a daily basis. Your basal metabolic rate (BMR) is the number of calories per day that your body needs just to function and stay alive. It can be estimated by multiplying your weight in pounds by 11-12, meaning someone who weighs 150 pounds will have a BMR of 1,650-1,700 calories per day. To determine the number of calories needed for weight loss, subtract 500-1,000 from this total to account for exercise and other activities.
What are bad carbs, protein and fat?
It is important to know the difference between good, bad and unhealthy carbs, protein, and fats. Good carbs are found in whole grains such as whole wheat bread or pasta. These should be consumed with a protein source such as beans or nuts. There are also carbs that are high in sugar such as white breads or pastries which can still be ate but in moderation. Healthy fat comes from foods like avocados and olive oil while unhealthy fat comes from red meat or deep fried food. Protein can be found in most animal products like eggs, fish and poultry while soybeans are a good vegetarian option. Stay tuned for the next blog post on how to stay healthy while dieting!
