It's Time To Beat Procrastination : Day 1

I’m a fully fledged expert at Procrastination. Actually I’ll take that one step further, as I place my crown on my head, I am the Queen of Procrastination.

I have a job that needs to be done but a week later I’m listening to my negative self talk because not only did I not get the task done, I did not even attempt to start it. The reigning Queen is off to a flying start.

Procrastination: the act of finding every excuse under the sun NOT to start or complete a task or set of tasks.

What is my Why?

If I’m ever to overcome this habit of postponing things until they are either, completed at the last minute or not done at all, I need to find out my why.

A prompt to write down all the reasons why you are Procrastinating,

The reasons I procrastinate:

  • Lack of confidence
  • Fear of failure
  • Feeling overwhelmed
  • Unsure of where to begin

1. Lack of confidence

Whenever I attempt something new I hear that nagging voice from my childhood, telling me I’m not good enough and I will never succeed. Now I’ve lived enough years on this earth to know that is not true but the initial thoughts and panic can be enough to delay, indefinitely the beginning of a task or project.

2. Fear of failure

This may seem like another way to word reason number one above. However, it is not. Lack of confidence is a ‘why’ I procrastinate starting a task or project.

Fear of failure on the other hand is often the excuse used to put it all aside and wait for another day to complete it. Of course, dependant on the strength of my fear as to whether the task or project gets completed at all.

3. Feeling overwhelmed

This is a huge excuse for me. Before I commence a big task or project, I start planning it in my thoughts. But suddenly I decide that before I can begin, certain other things need to be completed first. This escalates until I have such a huge list to get through. The perfect excuse to push it all aside because I’m totally overwhelmed.

4. Unsure of where to begin

Another one that I use often to put off doing. I struggle to find the beginning of a task or project. Every time I’m determined to complete a task, I put so much pressure on myself that I don’t know where to begin. Just as I decide on a good starting point, I question the plan, second guess myself and I’m back to square one…….where to begin?

The Queen has proven once more that she has procrastination down to a fine art.

This piece has been written at a request through a prompt by a fellow author. For each day over the next week (seven days) a prompt will be generated around the act of Procrastination. This is Day One and aimed at teaching us what our ‘why’ is in regards to procrastination. It’s designed to incite us to get to know ourselves a little better.

I am curious to see what the prompt is for Day Two, but we will need to wait until tomorrow to find out.

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.
