Breaking the Rut

A Soccer Player’s Journey to Rediscover Motivation

By Usman Saleem Khan PanniPublished 3 years ago 3 min read

Kai lay on his bed, staring at the ceiling, feeling an overwhelming sense of ennui. The once-talented soccer player, who had received offers from several prestigious colleges, now struggled to find the energy or drive to push himself. Days blurred together in a monotonous haze, as he woke up late, skipped breakfast, and spent hours scrolling mindlessly through social media. Despite promising himself that he would go for a run or practice his soccer skills, it never seemed to materialize.

Kai felt stuck in a rut and couldn't shake the nagging feeling that he was no longer passionate about soccer or that it did not cut him out for the life of a professional athlete. However, one fateful day, an unexpected visitor knocked on his door, altering the course of his life.

It was his coach, Coach Johnson, who had been instrumental in getting Kai recruited by top colleges.

"Hey Kai, I need to talk to you about something," Coach Johnson said, his tone serious and concerned.

Kai sat up, apprehension tightening in his chest. He wondered if the coach was going to tell him that he was no longer a good fit for the team, or that he needed to up his game.

"What's going on, Coach?" Kai asked, trying to keep his voice steady.

"I've noticed that you haven't been yourself lately," Coach Johnson said, his eyes searching Kai's face. "You've been missing practices, your performance on the field has been lackluster, and you just seem to be going through the motions."

Embarrassed and ashamed, Kai hung his head, knowing Coach Johnson was right. He didn't know how to change.

"Listen, Kai," Coach Johnson continued, his tone softening. "I know that you're capable of great things. I've seen you play at your best, and I know that you have the talent and the drive to become a professional athlete. But I also know that it's not easy. It takes hard work, dedication, and most of all, motivation."

A glimmer of hope sparked within Kai. Maybe the coach could help him find a way out of this funk.

"There's a book that I want you to read," Coach Johnson said, pulling a slim volume from his bag. "It's called 'The Mind Gym' and it's all about the psychology of sports performance. It's helped me and many other athletes that I've worked with over the years, and I think it could help you too."

Kai took the book, looking at the cover skeptically. He had never been much of a reader, and the idea of reading a self-help book seemed cheesy and unappealing.

However, as he flipped through the pages, something caught his eye. The book was filled with practical tips and exercises for improving focus, setting goals, and overcoming mental blocks. It spoke directly to the challenges that Kai was facing and offered tangible solutions for how to overcome them.

Intrigued and hopeful, Kai delved into "The Mind Gym." As he absorbed the author's wisdom and guidance, he began implementing the strategies and techniques suggested, setting goals for himself and visualizing his success on the field.

Slowly but surely, Kai's mindset shifted. He started to see himself as a successful athlete, pushing himself harder toward his goals. The lessons of "The Mind Gym" breathed new life into his motivation and drive.

Transformed, Kai was no longer the lazy, unmotivated athlete he had been just a few weeks earlier. He became a focused, driven player, determined to achieve his goals. He woke up earlier, ate healthier, and practiced his soccer skills for hours each day. He even started hitting the gym regularly, intent on improving his physical strength and endurance.

His hard work paid off. In his final year of high school, Kai led his team to the state championship, earning the title of tournament MVP. He received even more college offers and ultimately chose to attend a top university on a full athletic scholarship.

Over the next four years, Kai continued to excel in the field, earning all-conference and all-region honors multiple times. Professional teams scouted him, and eventually he signed a contract to play for a team in Europe.

As he reflected on his journey, Kai realized that it wasn't just the book that had helped him find his motivation. It was the people around him – his coach, teammates, and family – who believed in him even when he didn't believe in himself. They had pushed him to be better, showing him that he was capable of achieving great things.

Stepping onto the field for his first professional game, Kai felt a powerful mix of gratitude and determination. He knew he still had a long way to go but also knew he possessed the motivation and drive to succeed. As he scored his first goal, he couldn't help but smile, knowing he had escaped the rut and was now living the life he had always dreamed of.
