Have you ever read the book “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People” or seen the TV show? If so, then you may have come across Stephen Covey’s classic story about a young man who wants to plant and grow a forest. However, instead of planting seedlings and caring for them while they grow, he decides to cut down all the trees in his backyard first before beginning his plan.

Although this sounds like an irrational action because obviously, one must very much care for seedlings if they are intent on growing their own forest, it doesn’t seem so strange when we apply this example to our life goals. We may want to become highly effective at something — whether that is being successful in business or having a loving family — but sometimes our impatience leads us to cut down all the trees before we even start out. This means that instead of looking for ways to become more effective at something, we look for shortcuts. Not only are these shortcuts anti-productive since they usually involve instant gratification, but they also prevent us from investing in ourselves which is integral to success.

If you think about it, nothing great ever came easily or quickly. It takes time and hard work to accomplish anything worthwhile or valuable. You have to invest your time in order to get results so finding yourself should be the first thing on your list if you’re truly interested in becoming highly effective at life because once you find yourself you can start building up your foundation to success. This doesn’t mean you have to quit your job and go on a spiritual retreat in the Himalayas if that isn’t what you’re interested in doing; it just means that there are certain things you should do which will help ensure your continued growth.

Where Can You Start?

First, however, before we can discover how to invest in yourself, we must understand why investing in yourself is important. In fact, think of it this way: everything great out there — whether it be inventions like the iPhone or incredible human accomplishments like landing on the moon — took time and lots of money to accomplish with both effort and passion involved at every stage of development.

The majority of most successful people’s lives consisted early on of living sparsely so they could invest their money in themselves instead of spending it on frivolities. For example, Abraham Lincoln had very little formal education but he managed to become one of the greatest presidents the United States ever saw by reading books and educating himself. Moreover, he invested his time into learning how to speak effectively so that when he became an orator people would listen to him with rapt attention — which paid off massively during his famous Gettysburg Address where people listened carefully because it was clear that President Lincoln believed what he saying (he gave this speech knowing the war couldn’t be won during this battle).

Think about your favorite artist, musician, or writer; someone who has impacted you not only through their work but also personally. Chances are they invested huge amounts of time into their craft so they could become effective. They wanted to understand their medium inside and out — why, for example, the color green creates a sad or depressing mood — so they could use it to convey messages about themselves which resonated with others.

And this is exactly why investing in yourself is important: you are your most valuable asset. There is no other person on earth who can do what you can do because there is no one else who has the combination of experiences that make up your life story. However, nobody else will be able to access those memories except you because only you can bring them to life since you experienced them first-hand. Don’t take this for granted! You are an incredibly rare breed and there’s no one else in the world like you.

Focus and Invest in Your Skills

How are your skills? Are you a great listener or do people prefer to talk instead of listening? Do you have good leadership abilities or are you more passive when it comes to making decisions for other people? Are you afraid of trying new things or are you someone who likes to push themselves outside their comfort zone? Once you determine what these innate skills are, start figuring out how to maximize them because being effective means being able to use all your “super powers” which takes practice — this will also help ensure that these skills don’t fade over time.

You may wonder whether or not developing these kinds of skills is really worth the effort because it’s easier to just leave them as they are. The problem with letting your skills stay how they are is that this means you’ll always be the same, which limits your ability to grow because there will always be someone who can outperform you in any given area no matter how much practice you put in. This is why it’s important to invest time into developing yourself — so you can continue being effective at life for the rest of your life!

Ready to Turbocharge Your Effectiveness?

Therefore, what are three things people should do if they’re interested in becoming more effective?

1) Take a step back and look at where you are now compared to where you want to go. You might find that you have certain goals but don’t know how to reach them because you have no idea what you need to do next. The answer to this problem is identifying your strengths and weaknesses so you can find out which areas of your life are holding you back from accomplishing these goals.

2) Once you know what’s stopping you, work on figuring out how to overcome the challenges blocking the path between where you are now and where you want to be. How could it be done differently? What tools or skills would make all the difference? This will help prepare yourself for adversity ahead (that nobody gets through without facing some kind of challenge!) by teaching yourself new strategies designed specifically for overcoming these obstacles.

3) When developing who we are as people, practicing isn’t enough; it takes ongoing effort because we’re constantly changing. This is why it’s important to invest time into developing yourself — so you can continue being effective at life for the rest of your life!
