Life is more than the dollars in your bank account

As the song goes, Cash Rules Everything Around Me.

Yes, I know. We need to get the money. Once you build wealth, you can funnel it into other parts of your life. But now everyone’s focused on the money to the point where it’s getting stressful, overwhelming, and downright annoying.

For instance, most publications and YouTube videos have content along the lines of “How I Made $10,000 in 30 Days” or “How I Created 10 Passive Income Streams In 12 Months.”

Their goal is not to be clickbait but to “inspire” and “motivate” you to take action. But these articles only succeed in making everyone else feel like crap while the creators rack up views for some extra coin.

These articles are a stark reminder.

But what about the other parts of our lives? Aren’t there other things we can do to get healthy, stay happy, and be more at peace? Yes, we would all love to wipe our tears with worthless dollar bills, but why have those tears in the first place?

There are things we can do to make our lives infinitely better, and it’s all down to spending time on the things (and the people) that matter. When you feel fulfilled here, the money will come because you’ll be in no rush to build wealth. To make the most of your life today, ask yourself these 3 questions and take action immediately:

1. What are the 3 (non-monetary) things that make your life difficult?

Remove these 3 things immediately.

This could be someone toxic in your life or a debt collector stressing you out. It could be poor health. It could be a lack of sleep or back pain.

Write the first 3 things down that come to mind, then start working on them:

Lose that person’s phone number. In my debt collector example, reach out and come to an agreement you can stick with so you won’t have to speak with them again.

Toss the food out.

Go on YouTube and learn stretches and techniques to ease the pain or improve your sleep.

Review your list daily and remind yourself that these things make your life difficult. You must work to keep them in check.

2. What are 3 hobbies you enjoyed as a child?

I loved playing sports, and I played anything from table tennis and basketball to football. I really was not the best at them, but I was not picked last on any team either.

Playing sports was about having fun and giving it my best.

I also loved video games and reading science fiction.

If you’re like me, you’ve stopped doing these things because they’re a ‘waste of time.’

Play is how we expanded our minds, made new connections, and improved our bodies. Play made us happy. Why are we depriving ourselves of it completely to pursue money? Surely, we can find balance.

So what about you? What are the 3 things you enjoyed as a child? Write them down and commit to doing them at least once a week. Not to monetize. Not to show off on Instagram. Just for you.

3. What are 3 things you can do to add more joy to your life?

One of the biggest misconceptions we have is that we can’t do anything or make a difference unless we’re doing well financially. Throwing money at a problem or waiting for it to come to find joy is lazy and counterproductive. Spending time on things that matter will make you a productive, happy human.

What are the 3 things you can do today? Some examples:

Connecting with your best friend every week.

You could help a charity or become an advocate for a specific cause.

Spending more time with your son or your mom.

Taking a weekend road trip.

Write them down and plan them in your calendar.

We’re more than side hustles and passive income

So what can you do for a little more balance and peace in your life? Stressing over money, side hustles, and success takes us further and further away from the things and people that make us happy. Focusing on growing wealth alone won’t remove the things that have been making life harder either.

We must find balance. If it’s a challenge, start with these 3 questions and take some action every day. Yes, spend some time expanding your skills and your income but don’t forget about the other parts of you.
