A Journey Through Darkness: My Struggle to South Africa
I am an ordinary Bangladeshi, like many others, dreaming of a better future for my family. I had heard countless success stories of people going abroad, making money, and changing their lives. But I did not have the means to go legally. The process was too expensive, and I had no strong connections. So, I made a risky decision—to take the illegal route to South Africa. I believed that once I reached there, I would find work, earn money, and return home as a successful man.

A Journey Through Darkness: My Struggle to South Africa
A Dream Turned into a Nightmare
I am an ordinary Bangladeshi, like many others, dreaming of a better future for my family. I had heard countless success stories of people going abroad, making money, and changing their lives. But I did not have the means to go legally. The process was too expensive, and I had no strong connections. So, I made a risky decision—to take the illegal route to South Africa. I believed that once I reached there, I would find work, earn money, and return home as a successful man.
I took a flight from Dhaka to Dubai, then another to Tanzania. From there, I traveled to Mozambique’s Maputo Airport and finally reached Pemba. That was where my nightmare truly began. I had to wait outside an unfamiliar house for three days with little food, surviving only on hope. My journey depended on two Mozambican guides who promised to take me across the South African border through a secret jungle route.
Betrayal in the Jungle
One dark night, we began our journey. The guides assured me that we would reach South Africa safely. But deep inside the jungle, they suddenly turned against me. They took everything—my money, my phone, my bag—leaving me alone and helpless.
Terrified and lost in the wilderness, I spent the night hiding, unsure whether I would survive. I was hungry, thirsty, and exhausted. The jungle was full of unknown dangers—wild animals, snakes, and perhaps even criminals waiting to prey on helpless migrants like me.
There was no turning back. Eventually, I gathered the courage to move forward. I walked through the dense forest, carefully avoiding detection. After hours of struggling, I finally managed to cross the border into South Africa with nothing but the clothes on my back.
The Harsh Reality of Survival
I had thought that reaching South Africa was the hardest part, but I was wrong. The real struggle had just begun.
Finding work was nearly impossible. I had no legal documents, no contacts, and no resources. I slept wherever I could—sometimes in parks, sometimes outside shops. I survived on whatever little food I could find.
After months of hardship, I managed to open a small shop. It gave me hope—I thought I could finally build a stable life. But fate had other plans. One night, armed robbers stormed my shop and took everything. I lost all my savings, but I refused to give up.
I worked again, started over, and rebuilt my shop. But the robberies didn’t stop. Not once, not twice—but five times I was robbed. Each time, I lost everything and had to start all over again.
The police did nothing. I realized that as an illegal migrant, I had no rights, no protection, and no future. I lived every day in fear—fear of another robbery, fear of being attacked, fear of being caught and deported.
Hunger, loneliness, and the constant struggle broke me mentally. I had left my home with dreams of success, but all I found was pain and suffering.
The Painful Decision to Return
After five and a half years of endless hardship, my body and mind could take no more. I had lost all hope. The dream that once brought me here had turned into an unbearable nightmare.
I had given everything to this journey—my money, my energy, my youth—but in return, I got nothing. I realized that no amount of struggle could change my situation.
With nothing left, I made the difficult decision to return to Bangladesh. When I arrived back home, I was a broken man—empty pockets, poor health, and shattered dreams. The only thing I brought back with me was the painful lesson of my journey.
A Lesson for Others
Looking back, I realize that choosing the illegal route was the biggest mistake of my life. I left home with dreams of wealth, but I returned with nothing but scars.
I share my story so that others may learn from my mistakes. No dream is worth losing your dignity, safety, and peace of mind. The harsh reality is that illegal migration is not the answer.
Success doesn’t come from shortcuts—it comes from hard work and patience. Instead of risking your life in a foreign land, invest in yourself and your country. There are many opportunities at home—you just have to find them.
To my fellow Bangladeshis who dream of going abroad illegally, think twice. Ask yourself—is it worth it?
Dream big, but take the right path. No amount of money is worth losing yourself.
