Living in a world that tilt toward societal decay and moral numbness can often times be unkind to open-minded optimistic people. There will always be those set of black-hearted people that will see this character trait as gullible (which is usually true), weak and targets to carry out sinister mischiefs. Many innocent people suffer daily at the hands of opportunistic and crafty individuals, and sometimes, when they realize how deeply they had been hurt, some even go as far as outdoing their deceivers by causing greater harm to other innocent people, thereby creating a vicious cycle of wickedness. How can an open-minded optimist therefore survive and thrive with all these hurdles placed on his path?

  • Know Yourself, Know Your Enemies

"By all means let's be open-minded, but not so open-minded that our brains drop out."

- Richard Dawkins.

The first thing to bear in mind is this, without discovering yourself as an individual one might wander in insanity, swaying back and forth as the wind of life blows. The need to know yourself is very important if you are to identify who your enemies are. I wrote an article on knowing yourself:

I always tell myself “You can lie to the world but never to yourself. In the end, the truth is if you don't know yourself you’ll keep living a lie, a fake life of your own making.” And I believe this to be as true as day.

  • Know Your Circle

Knowing your circle requires keen watchfulness. Knowing your personality is always lively, having sharp senses of sight, observation and alertness are both important and helpful.

Always pay attention to what people say, their gestures and reactions to certain situations. Be a master at paying attention.

Watchfulness, they say, is the path of immortality. This is true in all forms. With watchfulness, knowing your enemies will be easier, and dealing with them, more clandestine. The people around you are the ones you're most vulnerable, so before you let a person into your circle they should go through some tests you customize to fit their personality.

  • Tone Down Your Sentimentality

Now this applies to everyone. Sentiments can come in handy in certain situations, but it is good to be sentimental to the right people and at the right situation. Open-minded optimists are perceived easy to read and therefore when it comes to decision making, are easy to manipulate. But it is up to you to assess the situation and make the right decisions.

The best way to tone down on sentimentality is to do things with all honesty. No permanent friends, no permanent enemies, only permanent interest. This is the approach I apply when trying to do away with sentiments, and when I do apply this, getting things done becomes faster and accurate.

  • The 'Yes' Factor

Now this is a major problem for open-minded optimists. Saying yes just feels easier than refusing. This is dangerous and can be capitalized by bad people to take advantage of you. Learn to know the signs of compelling and when you notice you're being compelled to do things against your will and conscience, say 'no'.

You ow no one an apology for refusing to discomfort yourself just to please him/her. They may call you names (most times behind your back), that is a good thing, it is evidence of your refusal to belittle your standards and principles. Ley your yes be your yes, and your no, no.

  • Guide Your Tongue

This is common sense, although actualization can be harder than some might think. There are those who just don't have it in them to keep quiet. If you are like this, don't fight your nature. Talk as much as you like. But be wise enough to filter what you tell certain people. Not everyone deserves certain information about your life. Don't reveal too much to people, and know when to keep quiet. Always trust your sixth sense, and stay true to yourself at all times. Not everyone deserves a response from you, what you say is who you are.
