10 Things I Wish I Knew Earlier

The advice you needed but never got

By Abdul Basir SadatPublished about a year ago • 3 min read

If I could go back and talk to my younger self, I wouldn’t give him warnings — I’d give him wisdom. Life doesn’t come with instructions, and most of the powerful lessons don’t come before the fall — they come after it. The truth is, growth happens in the dark. Wisdom is not just what protects you from pain, it’s what you earn through pain. These are 10 lessons I wish I had learned earlier. Not just to avoid mistakes, but to live with more peace, purpose, and clarity.

1. Your comfort zone is your silent killer

Comfort feels safe, but it slowly drains your potential. Staying where everything is familiar will keep you from where growth happens. Whether it's staying in a toxic friendship, a dead-end job, or avoiding risks that could bring progress — comfort convinces you to settle. Growth hurts, but regret hurts more. Real life begins when you step into the unknown. Make fear your compass.

2. Not everyone deserves your energy

Your time, attention, and emotional investment are limited resources. Some people are simply not worth the drain. Learn to recognize energy vampires — those who constantly take but never give. Protect your peace by choosing wisely who you allow into your space. Love people, yes. But don’t bleed for those who wouldn’t even scratch for you.

3. Time is more valuable than money

You can always make more money, but you can never earn back lost time. Don’t waste your days chasing what won’t matter in five years. Prioritize people, memories, and things that nourish your soul. Invest your time wisely — into learning, relationships, faith, and experiences that grow you. Every minute you spend is a part of your life you’re giving away.

4. Allah’s plan is always better than yours

Sometimes, the thing you beg Allah for is not what you need. Sometimes, your closed doors are protection, not punishment. When life doesn’t go the way you planned, trust His wisdom. Sabr (patience) is more powerful than you think. When you let go of control and surrender, peace enters. Tawakkul (trust in Allah) isn’t passive — it’s an active belief that no matter what happens, it will be good for you.

5. You don’t have to explain yourself to everyone

Trying to please everyone is exhausting. You are not here to be understood by everyone — you’re here to live in truth. Not everyone deserves an explanation. Be kind, but don’t waste your breath justifying your values, goals, or lifestyle. The people who matter will understand, and the rest are not your burden.

6. Saying “no” is a form of self-respect

Learn to say no without guilt. No to draining relationships. No to overworking. No to fake invitations. Every “yes” to others is a “no” to something in yourself. Boundaries don’t make you selfish — they make you strong. Protecting your energy and time is not a luxury, it’s a necessity. Respect yourself enough to walk away when something doesn’t align with your peace.

7. The pain you avoid today will come back tomorrow

Avoiding pain doesn’t make it disappear — it just postpones it. Unhealed trauma will show up in your relationships. Ignored emotions will explode eventually. Running from hard conversations only builds resentment. Face the pain. Feel it. Heal from it. Growth demands discomfort. Healing isn’t always easy, but staying broken is harder.

8. Your worth is not defined by others

You are not your job title, your income, or how many people praise you. Your worth is inherent. Stop tying your value to other people’s approval. They didn’t create you — so they can’t define you. Know your worth, even when the world forgets it. Be confident in your own skin, and walk in rooms like Allah sent you there.

9. Success means nothing without peace

You can have money, status, and followers — and still be miserable. Real success is sleeping at night with a clear conscience. It’s having relationships built on trust. It’s being content with what you have, even while striving for more. If you lose your peace chasing goals, you’re doing it wrong. Peace is the real prize.

10. Nothing changes until you do

You can wish for a better life, but if you’re not willing to grow, nothing will happen. Waiting for the perfect moment or blaming others only delays change. Real transformation begins when you take responsibility. Your mindset, your habits, your choices — these shape your future. Change isn’t found in motivation. It’s found in consistent, uncomfortable action.
