10 Keys That Helped Me Overcome Procrastination

Stop Procrastination!!

By J.SánchezPublished 2 years ago • 4 min read

Has it ever happened to you that you don’t start that new project, can’t seem to get started on that pending task, have trouble getting out of bed, or once you get home from work, you just don’t want to do anything? Well, I went through each of those stages, but when I applied these 10 tips, I realized that it’s not as difficult as it seems when you start on this path of discipline.

1. Change your mindset

The first thing you need to do is change your mindset, as your only rival in decision-making is yourself. Your mind controls you, so if procrastination is beating you, make yourself stronger and more powerful so it becomes a worthy rival. And you might ask: “Okay, but how do I do that?” Well, what worked for me was eliminating junk content, short-form content, and social media. If you’re not dedicated to or planning to make money from social media, then limit it urgently. Instead of wasting your time on that, educate yourself and start learning a skill, maybe music, sports, or something that clears your mind. And… that’s it, because later on, you’ll face the same problem we talked about in the article. So, read the next tip before continuing, because inevitably you will fail if you don’t do it.

RESET YOUR MINDSET

2. Identify the problem

How do you plan to eliminate the problem if you don’t even know what’s stopping you? Procrastination is just a term; what’s really stopping you could be anything: social media, TV, video games, partying, or lack of rest. Identify it, and find a good YouTube video that explains how to eliminate it effectively. And most importantly, apply what you’ve learned. Knowledge is useless if you don’t put it into practice…

3. Perfection

Although it may sound surprising, many people don’t start due to a mentality they have: “First, I get it, then I try.” They think that in order to achieve what they want, they must first receive it and then make an effort. While this is more focused on starting a project, for example, you’re waiting for the perfect camera, the best computer, the best microphone, whatever it is. Here’s a simple tip: look at the person you admire most — of course, they should be successful today. Now, look at their beginnings and ask yourself: “Did they start with everything I want to have when I start?” Just keep that in mind…

4. Set small goals

Sometimes what holds us back the most is seeing a huge task that overwhelms us — and that’s exactly when procrastination kicks in. But if you start breaking everything down into small parts, I promise you’ll see it differently. I used to think, “I have to do all of this,” and I’d freeze. Now I think, “Today I’m just doing this part.” And that makes all the difference! That way, you’ll move faster, and before you know it, you’ll have finished the whole task.

5. Create a schedule

Time is the most valuable resource we have, and without a schedule, it’s easy to waste it. I realized that if I didn’t have a plan, I felt lost. Now, every night I prepare my to-do list for the next day. And you know what? The best part is — I actually follow it! It’s amazing how just having a schedule makes you feel more in control of your life. So don’t leave it all to chance — plan your day and work with focus.

6. Eliminate distractions

This one is essential: distractions are everywhere. I had a bad habit of checking my phone constantly, but that’s a trap. If you don’t control it, it’ll cost you big time. So, the first thing I did was turn on “Do Not Disturb” and delete the apps that were just wasting my time. In my workspace, I also made sure that anything that didn’t help me stayed out. When you cut out distractions, you realize how productive you can actually be.

7. Use the two-minute rule

If something takes less than two minutes to do — do it right away! This trick changed how I looked at all the little tasks I used to put off. Replying to emails, tidying up my desk — those kinds of things only took a couple minutes, but I’d always leave them for later. Now, I do them instantly and take that weight off my shoulders. And the best part is, it gives you a boost of momentum to keep going.

8. Reward yourself

I get it — we all need a little extra motivation. I found out that giving myself a small reward at the end of each task helped me stay consistent. Sometimes it’s something as simple as taking a break or watching an episode of my favorite show. The key is not waiting until the end of a huge project to reward yourself. When you celebrate the small wins, you stay motivated to keep moving forward.

9. Hold yourself accountable

At first, if no one asked me how I was doing with my tasks, it was easy to leave things for tomorrow. That’s why sharing my goals with someone and telling them what I wanted to accomplish helped me stay on track. Now, I tell a friend what I plan to do, and they check in later to see if I did it. It’s a great way to stay focused and keep procrastination in check!

10. Be kind to yourself
