Men with gynaecomastia, or enlarged breasts, are more likely to die before the age of 75 than those without the condition, say researchers at Copenhagen University Hospital in Denmark.

Researchers collected health data from 140,574 men between 1995 and 2021, including 23,429 men with gynecomastia. Researchers compared the health data of those with the disease with those without.

People with gynecomastia were divided into two groups: those with idiopathic gynecomastia (of unknown cause) , including 16,253 people, and those with diseases or using drugs related to the development of gynecomastia , including 7,176 people.

As of June 2021, 12,676 men with gynecomastia had died, representing 9% of the total study population.

Results showed that men with gynecomastia had a 37% higher risk of death before age 75 than those without the disease.

The researchers note that their findings are observational and that further studies are needed to clarify the link between gynecomastia and the risk of death before age 75.

The research results were published in the British journal BMJ Open on January 17, 2024.

Gynecomastia is a condition in which the male breast gland increases abnormally in size.

What is gynecomastia?

According to the National Health Service, UK (NHS), gynecomastia is a condition in which the male breast gland increases in size abnormally, similar to the female breast . The disease can occur at any age but usually occurs in men during puberty or the elderly.

The cause of this condition is usually due to a hormonal imbalance between the two sex hormones, testosterone and estrogen. Hormonal imbalances often occur in boys during puberty, when hormone levels change, or in older men when their bodies age and produce less testosterone.

Additionally, obesity can also be a cause of breast enlargement, according to the NHS . Being overweight (obese) can increase oestrogen levels, causing abnormal breast tissue growth.

Some other causes of gynecomastia in men include:

Side effects of medications – such as medications for stomach ulcers, heart disease medications, or medications containing anabolic steroids;

Using stimulants;

Alcohol abuse;

Have kidney failure or liver disease;

Have Klinefelter syndrome (a rare genetic disorder).

Signs and treatment of breast hypertrophy

Signs of breast hypertrophy are usually an abnormal mass in the breast, increased chest size . This condition can occur in one or both breasts, and may or may not cause pain. The disease is sometimes only discovered by chance during a medical examination.

To treat breast hypertrophy, patients need to see a specialist for advice on one of the two following treatments:

Use medication to regulate and balance hormones.

Surgery to remove excess tissue from the breast.
