Proposals all take a long time, but this one might be the longest.

“Hey, you should marry me,” Jake said, sipping his Capri-Sun. You chewed on the chocolate chip cookie that your mom had made and nodded.

“Okay,” you responded. He smiled and handed you a cosmic brownie.

“Cool. Now we’re married.”

Middle School

Your books flew out of your hands as the rude boys ran into you. Apparently, ‘keep the ball away from the nerd’ was more important.

“Hey, Emily, are you okay?” Jake asked, bending down to help you pick up your books and strewn about papers. You nodded and sighed.

“Stupid boys, they all suck.”

He pouted, helped you up and carried your things. “Hey, not all boys,” he defended. You giggled.

“You’re right, your part of the male population doesn’t suck. Thanks, Jake.” He nodded and walked you to your next class of the day. Math, yay. He set your belongings on your desk and smiled at you, his blue eyes sparkling.

“I’ll be one room over if you need me!” he encouraged, and you gave him a hug.

“Aw, Emily and Jake! They’re so in love!” a girl commented. You rolled your eyes and Jake chuckled.

“Yeah, sure. Hey Emily, wanna get married since we’re so in love?” he joked. You laughed.

“Eh, why not!” you answered. He did a fist bump and faced your class.

“We’re getting married and none of you are invited. Stick that in your Capri-Sun and suck it!”

Years Later

You can’t believe that it has been fifteen years since you and Luke met in kindergarten. What a whirlwind it’s been. You both had been in a few relationships, none of them lasting more than a few months. Now, you were actually seeing each other, and have been for two years. You’ve never been happier. It was much easier because you already knew everything about each other and could talk about anything. His hand in yours brought you back to reality as he pulled you along three streets of Sydney.

“Jake, you still haven’t told me where we’re going,” you reminded. He just smiled and intertwined his fingers with yours.

“That’s the point, Emily, it’s a surprise! You're not supposed to know.”

You sighed and followed him, questioning whether or not he actually knew were he was going. He turned down a busy street where the supermarket resided and you raised an eyebrow.

“Really, Jake? This is your idea of a romantic date?”

He chuckled and pecked your cheek, “Just wait love.”

You entered the supermarket and he looked at the signs over the aisles, trying to find what he was looking for. He then pulled you to the juice aisle so that you were both standing in front of the Capri-Suns.

“Fruit punch, that’s it,” he muttered and grabbed the box.

“Jake... why?” you asked. He winked dragging you into another aisle. This one had all the cookies and sweets. What was this boy doing? He found a bag of chocolate chip cookies—your favorite, actually—and a box of something that he kept hidden.

“Emily, I’m going to check out, I’ll met you outside okay love.” You blinked and stared at him.

“Okay... and then you’re explaining what’s going on,” you countered. He looked at you with so much love in his eyes.

“I will. I promise.”

You waited for your dork of a boyfriend, staring at the setting sky. The orange and pink were swirling to make a gorgeous light. A tap on your shoulder made you jump and Jake chuckled.

“Sorry, princess. C’mon,” he said taking your hand again. He took you to the enormous tree where you spent most of your childhood talking and laughing with Jake. He motioned for you to sit down and you did.

“Jake what’s going on?” you questioned. He sat in front of you with the grocery bag.

“Do you remember that day in kindergarten when I told you we would get married?” he asked, pulling out the cookies and Capri-Sun. You nodded and watched him. “Well, that day, I was drinking a fruit punch Capri-Sun, and you were eating a chocolate chip cookie,” he opened up the box and handed you a Capri-Sun, then opened the bag of cookies placing one in front of you. You smiled and opened your drink.

“I can’t believe you remember that,” you mumbled. You nibbled on the cookie and he opened the mystery box.

“Emily, you should marry me,” he said as he put a small pack of cosmic brownies in your hand.

Your eyes widened and you looked up at him, “Are you serious?” He grinned and pulled out a velvet box.

“I’m very serious. I love you and I want to be with you forever.”

When he opens the box, you gasped and opened your mouth. Inside was a beautiful silver diamond ring. “So, Emily, will you marry me? I can give you more brownies if that will persuade you,” he chuckled. You threw your arms around his neck and kissed his lips.

“Yes! Yes, I’ll will marry you! But, also, I want more brownies!”

He laughed and kissed your neck, forehead and lips.

“Cool, now we’re engaged!”
