You’ve unloaded the boxes, adjusted the furniture, and hung a few things on the walls in your new house. Hmmm. You know, or think you know, how you want your rooms to feel, but you can’t seem to move away from the builder’s white walls and your old things to that great, inviting vibe you received in the model house you bought?

Before you worry and genuine anxiety sets in, remember that there are more simple remedies available than ever before. Decorator periodicals, home decorating shows, websites, merchants, and excellent books with clear instructions are all available. Returning to model houses will be beneficial. “OK, I see them, I purchase them, I visit them, and I enjoy them,” you say, “but how can I do it?” I’m not sure where to start.”

Begin with a room from a magazine or a model home that you adore. It’ll be known as your fantasy chamber. You will receive the greatest results if you can visit the model house to feel and examine the area or room. Request permission to photograph the models as well. This will come in handy when you go home and go shopping. Bring a tape measure and a spiral notebook to take notes and sketch ideas. The ones with plastic tabs and compartments on the inside are my favorites.

Let’s start with the basics and see what we like.

Is the ceiling and all the walls the same color? What color(s) does the space have? Take note of this. Is there a chair rail, ornate molding, wall covering, or faux painting on the ceiling? What’s on the ground? Is there carpet, tile, or area rugs? What color, texture, and pattern do you want? Is the area rug braided, Persian, or modern, and is it placed diagonally beneath one of the chairs and sofa?

What is the furniture’s style? Is everything supposed to match? Are all of the forests the same? Although the couch and club chairs may have the same design and wood finish, the chairs have patterned upholstery while the sofa is covered in a solid or striped fabric. Take note of this.

What is the layout of the furniture? Is there a sofa in the centre of the room that separates the discussion area from the game table, or is everything pressed up against the walls? Make a floor layout so you don’t forget anything when you arrive home.

The glass windows. Are there any blinds, shutters, valences, or drapes on the windows? Are the rods enormous or little, made of wood or metal, and topped with massive finials? Keep a record of it. Do the panels on either side of the window go all the way to the ground? What color are they, exactly? Are these the same fabric as the throw pillows on the sofa or do they match the walls? Is it the curtain tieback that draws your attention? When choosing your window treatments, keep in mind the amount of light and privacy that your windows provide.

The accessories add pizzazz. Many individuals adore the model homes or magazine images that inspire them because of this. The tiny items that we all like to gather and buy when we go shopping. This is what ties the space together and gives it character. What type of lighting do you have in the space you adore? Is there a spot where you can keep the items you’ll need to put away? Is there a collection of items on the coffee table? What are their dimensions? Is there a tall object with a huge circular plate on a stand and a box clustered together?

How big are the images on the end tables, and how does the frame style fit in with the rest of the room?

What can you see on the walls? Is there a single enormous painting over the sofa or a collection of black and white images in various sizes? What color is the matting, and how much room does the photo have between it and the frame? Particulars, particulars, particulars. In your notepad, sketch out the photo layout and sizes.

Congratulations. You’ve taken the first step in decorating your own house.

You know exactly what you want, how it will be put together, and how it will seem. You don’t have to spend a fortune on your place right now. The furniture and furnishings are most likely already in your possession. You could already have the lighting and the area rug. It’s possible that you’ll have to start over.

Let’s get started. Select the paint chips that you believe best match your fantasy room at the paint store. Take a few samples because color may be misleading and they can seem differently depending on the light. Return to the model house to discover which ones are the best fit. Purchase the paint and begin painting the space.

Your window covering. If you want to recreate your fantasy room perfectly, make sure you consider seclusion and exposure. This is where many folks go wrong. They purchase shutters because they like them. Then they dislike them and ask what went wrong with their fantasy room. With a shade and curtain panels on wide wood rods, your ideal room may have been more airy. The improper blinds, shutters, draperies, and hardware can be an expensive mistake you won’t regret.

Arrange your furniture to accommodate discussion, TV viewing, family fun, reading, dining, or studying while keeping your dream room in mind. Was everything arranged on one side of the room? It’s possible that your sofa is the wrong color and that your chairs need to be reupholstered. That doesn’t mean you have to buy everything new; slipcovers are an option. You may either buy them or manufacture them yourself. Make sure your accessories are something you wish to have about you and are large enough for your area. Voila! You’re well on your way to gaining decorating confidence and living in a house that you and your family enjoy.
