Though you may not realize it, the way that you decorate your bedroom (and the things that you have in it) can affect your sleeping patterns. Because of this, it is important to choose your decorations carefully so that you can get a good night's sleep every night. You also should watch what you keep in your bedroom. There are many items that will keep you up at night.

Not sure what you should have in your bedroom, don't worry. Here are some tips to make your bedroom conducive to sleep.

Make sure that your bedroom is only used for sleeping (and romance).

Many people use their bedrooms as a place to relax at night. They watch television, have meaningful conversations, and much more. However, these things can only distract you from the real reason you are in there: to get some sleep.

You can start by only going to your bedroom when it is time for you to get some sleep. Keep everything else out in the living room.

Take your electronics out of your bedroom!

The recommendations are that you shouldn't have a television or any electronics in your bedroom. Electronics can keep you up longer than you wanted to if you get sucked into a television show, a book, or even on social media. Engaging content on your phone can keep you up for hours after you should be sleeping.

Electronics are also bad because they emit light, which slows down your production of melatonin. This keeps you awake even more.

And Do Something About the Clutter in Your Bedroom.

Many people fill their bedrooms with clutter. This is sometimes a necessity if they use their bedroom as an office or a gym. They may have a desk filled with work, or they may store their treadmill in the corner.

However, this isn't going to help you sleep. You need to find another place to work and exercise, only using your bedroom to sleep. If you lay down and see all of the work that you have to do tomorrow, you are not going to get sleep. If you didn't have a chance to exercise and you see your treadmill waiting there, you may be tempted to get up and work out for a few minutes. If you don't, you may just lay there and think about it, long after you should be asleep.

You may also have plenty of extra clutter in your bedroom that can be distracting. If you have your clothes laying all over the room, you may think about putting them away instead of sleeping. If you have bills piled up in the corner, you may start worrying about your finances instead of sleeping. If you have a lot of items sitting around your bedroom, you may think about all of the dusting that you need to do to clean up your room.

None of this is going to help you sleep so you really need to do something about all of the clutter that you have laying around!

Keep it dark in your room.

You can start by turning the lights down in your room. Artificial light can really trick your body into thinking that it is daytime, making it hard to fall asleep. For this reason, you should light your room with a lamp (which you turn off when you are ready to fall asleep).

If that doesn't make it dark enough, you may need to get heavy curtains or blackout blinds. This is especially important for people who have to sleep during the day.

And Quiet.

Noise can also be very distracting when you are trying to sleep. Though some people like a sound machine or music to help them fall asleep, the truth is that sudden noises (like from outside or on the television) can wake us up multiple times a night, leaving us feeling like we didn't get any sleep at all!

So, what should you do? Set a timer for your radio so that it turns off after you are asleep. If you do need the television to fall asleep, see if you can find a way to make it turn off too!

If outside noises keep you awake (or keep waking you up), invest in a sound machine to drown them out so that you can wake up feeling refreshed every morning!

If you are serious about getting a good night's sleep, you may need to do something about it. Your bedroom may not be helping the situation. You are going to have to start thinking about it differently if you want to wake up feeling refreshed every morning.

Though it sounds like a lot, a few simple changes can really make a difference. You are going to need to change your way of thinking. Your bedroom should only be for sleeping. You need to get everything else out of there! You don't need a television (or any electronics) in there. Your office should be in another room. Your treadmill shouldn't be standing in the corner. If you have too much junk laying around in the room, you are going to spend your nights worrying and thinking, instead of falling (and staying asleep).

You should try to get your room as dark as possible. Turn the lights down low until you are ready to fall asleep. Then, turn them off. Try not to fall asleep with the lights on, or you may find yourself awake in a few hours, with little hope of falling back to sleep. If your room isn't dark enough, you may want to purchase better curtains.

Noise can also affect your sleep, so you need to stop falling asleep with the television or the radio on. You could get woken up multiple times a night because of certain noises that are on there. A loud yell may scare you enough to keep you up for the rest of the night. If you need to listen to the radio, set a timer for it to turn off in an hour or so. Though it is not recommended, if you fall asleep with the television on, see if there is a way for it to turn off automatically, so it doesn't wake you up in an hour or two. If you can't fall asleep due to the noises around your house, you may want to invest in a noise machine. These emit soothing noises to help you fall asleep and stay there all night long! Earplugs may work just as well!
