There are two main types of sleep: non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. These two types of sleep occur in different stages, and each stage serves a unique purpose.

NREM sleep is divided into three stages:

Stage 1 NREM sleep is the lightest stage of sleep and is considered to be a transition between being awake and asleep. During this stage, our breathing and heart rate begin to slow down, and our body temperature drops.

Stage 2 NREM sleep is considered to be the beginning of deep sleep. During this stage, our brain activity slows down and we become less responsive to external stimuli. This is the stage in which our muscles relax and our body temperature continues to drop.

Stage 3 NREM sleep is the deepest stage of sleep and is characterized by the greatest amount of slow wave activity in the brain. This stage is also known as delta sleep or slow wave sleep. During this stage, our breathing and heart rate become very slow, and our muscles become even more relaxed.

REM sleep is the stage of sleep in which we dream. During REM sleep, our eyes move rapidly in all directions, and our brain activity becomes more active. This is the stage of sleep where the most vivid and intense dreams occur. Our body is temporarily paralyzed during the REM sleep to prevent acting out the dream, this is called REM atonia. This stage of sleep is considered to be very important for our mental health, as it is thought to play a role in the consolidation of memories and the processing of emotions.

It's important to note that these stages of sleep are not always distinct and separate, and our brains cycle through them repeatedly throughout the night. An average adult will cycle through all four stages every 90 minutes to 120 minutes.

Getting a good night's sleep is crucial for our physical and mental health. During sleep, our bodies are able to repair and rejuvenate themselves. This is especially true during the deep sleep stages, where our bodies release growth hormone, which is necessary for cell repair and growth. Our brain also uses the time while we sleep to clear out harmful toxins that have accumulated during the day, which may contribute to a variety of neurological diseases.

Inadequate sleep can have a negative impact on our physical health. Chronic sleep deprivation has been linked to a variety of health problems, including obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and even an increased risk of death. A lack of sleep can also weaken our immune system, making us more susceptible to infections.

Sleep is also crucial for our mental health. The REM stage of sleep is thought to play a role in the consolidation of memories and the processing of emotions. This is why people who suffer from insomnia or other sleep disorders often experience anxiety and depression. A lack of sleep can also affect our ability to think and concentrate, and make it more difficult for us to make decisions and solve problems.
