The movements do it for you

Years ago when I started my journey in martial arts I learned movements. I learn Kempo and chin-na. Kempo is a striking art. Chin-na is grappling with joint locks.

These movements were put together into techniques that showed what targets to hit and how to hit them. Sometimes it was hard to practice these techniques. Just remembering the movements was hard.

In time these movements became muscle memory. Understanding how the movements combined with the targets made it easier to understand how they worked. Learning what happens when these targets are hit and how they opened other targets to hit if necessary.

The next road in my journey was Tai Chi. It taught body mechanics and balance through movement. Most people think it is just for health but it was first a fighting art. The health aspects are in there. We feel it is healthy not to get hit in the face. It goes a lot deeper than that. It is a whole-body art that promotes the efficiency of motion along with body mechanics. It helps you get maximum effect with minimal effort. I don't move until they do and when they do I'm already there!

It teaches you how your body moves so you can get the most benefit. It shows you how the body is supposed to move. It also teaches how it is not supposed to move. How to injure your opponent by moving their body against the way it is designed to move which injures them. It teaches their power zones. Where they are strong and where they are weak.

It also teaches sensitivity. How to connect with someone and instantly know where everything on their body is. Where they are strong. Where they are weak. Where their balance is. When you know this you learn how to take their balance. How to make them weak. Where they are vulnerable.

When you combine these skills you have an art that not only can protect you in a self-defense situation, remember it is not healthy to get hit in the face, it has a hidden benefit. The movements do it for you!

The drills teach you how to do the movements. The movements are used to generate energy. They are designed to teach you how your body structure is designed and how to use the movements to get the most benefit.

The movements cause you to expand and contract your lungs to get oxygen flowing into your blood. The muscles contract and expand to squeeze the blood through your veins and deliver the energy to the tissues that need it.

These movements also massage the meridians in your body. There are acupuncture points along these meridians that control body function. Certain movements make the mussels and bones move in a way that puts pressure on these points. They cause benefits that happen without thinking about it.

Just doing the movements helps keep you healthier. They let you use natural movement to do the work for you. By using the full movement of your body it will breathe for you if you would only let it.

After you learn the movements you might think it is hard to practice. You need to put the movements into your everyday actions.

When you get up to walk across the room use your balance. Let your arms swing so that they open and close your lungs. Let those muscles squeeze the blood through your veins.

Let your legs help move your arms.

Use your weight to open the doors.

Use your balance to pick up the dirty clothes.

Shift your weight when you wash the dishes. Let the weight shift move your arms.

When you do it in everything you do it will make you healthier.

Relax.

You can let your body work for you when you know how.
