“The Last Message I Never Sent”

“The Last Message I Never Sent”

By Behind the CurtainPublished 2 months ago 3 min read

The message sat there, unfinished.

“I miss you…”

That’s all I had typed.

Three simple words. Three words that felt heavier than everything I had carried for the past two years.

My thumb hovered over the keyboard, frozen. I stared at the screen as if it would somehow finish the sentence for me, say the things I didn’t have the courage to say.

But it didn’t.

It just blinked back at me. Waiting.

Just like I had been waiting.

It had been exactly 728 days since we last spoke.

Not that I was counting.

Okay… maybe I was.

Some people count memories. I counted silence.

You don’t realize how loud silence can be until it replaces someone’s voice. Until good morning texts disappear. Until late-night conversations turn into staring at a blank screen.

Until “we” becomes “I.”

We didn’t end with a fight.

That would have been easier.

No shouting. No harsh words. No dramatic goodbye.

Just distance.

And sometimes, distance hurts more than anything else. Because there’s no moment you can point to and say, “That’s when it broke.”

It just… fades.

Like a song slowly lowering its volume until you don’t even notice when it stops.

I still remember the way you used to laugh.

Not the polite kind. Not the kind people fake.

The real one.

The kind that made you throw your head back, the kind that made other people smile without knowing why.

The kind I thought I’d never forget.

And I didn’t.

That was the problem.

“Just text them.”

That’s what everyone says, right?

As if it’s that simple.

As if reaching out doesn’t come with a thousand “what ifs.”

What if you don’t reply?

What if you’ve moved on?

What if I’m just a memory you’ve already let go of?

Or worse…

What if you do reply, and nothing feels the same?

I looked around my room.

Everything had changed over the years.

New books. New desk. New version of me.

But somehow, a part of my life still felt stuck in the past—like a chapter I never finished reading.

And maybe that’s why the message still sat there.

“I miss you…”

Because I did.

Not just you.

But who I was when I was with you.

I picked up my phone again.

The cursor blinked.

Still waiting.

I took a deep breath and typed more.

“I miss you… and I don’t know if I should.”

I stared at the sentence.

It felt honest.

Raw.

Incomplete—but real.

You know what nobody tells you about moving on?

It’s not a straight line.

It’s messy.

Some days you feel free, like you’ve finally let go.

And then suddenly, out of nowhere, a song plays… or a place reminds you… or a random moment hits you…

And you’re right back where you started.

Missing someone who might not be missing you.

My finger moved closer to the “send” button.

My heart beat faster.

This was it.

Two years of silence… about to be broken.

Or maybe…

continued.

And then I stopped.

Not because I was scared.

Not because I didn’t care.

But because I finally understood something I hadn’t before.

Closure doesn’t always come from the other person.

Sometimes, it comes from you.

I read the message one last time.

“I miss you… and I don’t know if I should.”

Then slowly…

I deleted it.

Word by word.

Until the screen was empty again.

And for the first time in a long time…

So was I.

Not empty in a lonely way.

Empty in a peaceful way.

Like I had finally let go of something I didn’t need to carry anymore.

I didn’t send the message.

But somehow…

I still got my answer.
