Some Tips to Decorate Up Your Dorm/Apartment

Is that dorm room or apartment looking bland or as most would say "pretty average" or "prison-like?" It happens when decorating abilities are very limited due to regulations or fear of damages.

The walls in most residents are usually in a white to a chalky color and don't exactly make you feel at home. It may seem hopeless but there is plenty more potential to fix that up. In order to really make your new home better suit your personality, you can add some room brightening decorations.

Step 1) Tapestries Work Magic

When I noticed there was a lack of color in my dorm room, it did not take me long to search the web for something to add personality to my room. Everyone knows I like it simple, but the artist in me begged me to slap some work into that blank canvas. Soon enough, I discovered this beautiful tapestry from Amazon.com.

It added a flavor to the room that was missing. My roomate also added a tapestry to her wall and before other decorations, the apartment already felt more inspiring and home-like.

You can find unique and interesting tapestries that even look like doorways online. Most stores sell wall decorations, but you can find them cheapest through online websites like Amazon, DressLilly.com, and society6. To add even more flavor, get some cute plush pillows that match the setup.

Step 2) Pictures Speak a Thousand Words

The next best thing to make a new home feel like one, is photographs. Find the best ways to create your own gallery wall and just leave around the room as decorations.

My personal recommendation is to use any photobooth sets you have and secure them on your wall or set them up creatively on desk. Watch this LaurDIY video to see home cool ideas like that. She really helps me come up with neat, and fun ways to decorate.

Photographs just bring an atmosphere to the room and if you make it a gallery wall, but make sure to set up an idea for how you would lay it out. If you can't afford that huge tapestry to cover one wall, well take those photographs and get creative. Create your own tapestry of sorts.

Step 3) Washi Tape Saves Lives!

Here's the issue with apartments or dorms: They are usually temporary.

There is a lot of damage issues to be careful about so this is where washi tape comes in handy. It is the easy, no-damage way to lived up your walls, dressers, or doors even. This is a good route if you're scared of using Command strips or putty too. You can at least use it for smaller or light weight items to tape down/frame.

Need ideas for it, check out Pinterest pages with different geometric designs and ideas, and its defiantly the site to look for creative ideas.

Washi-tape can be put on your walls, and make cute frames for galleries or just decorate it up. I used it this year for that as well as outlining my dressers and closet. It just adds a hidden and more personality like look to my room. I wanted people to visit and feel cozy, and see "my look" in my room.

Step 4) Plants, Fake or Real

My last tip is to line those windows or desk up with some cute plants!

My roomate, Taylor, absolutely loves plants and really wanted to liven up our window while becoming a plant mom. So she went out to Walmart bought a $5 plant and painted its pot pink (DIYing it up :) ) and now it makes our window look so much cuter.

I was inspired but will definitely have to get a fake plant for myself. That is the best route for those fellow readers that can't keep a plant living. Props to Tay on her abilities!

Overall, the plants just make the room seem more lively. It is a fun side added into the room and you can put them in kitchens to the bedroom.

Now after following these 4 easy steps, your room will defiantly look fabulous compared to the drab you might have started with. Remember, the best thing to do is just make it feel like your place. Give the room your own flavor!
