The Analog Fortress: How to Build a Digital Detox Practice That Actually Lasts
The problem with digital detox advice is that most of it is designed for people who have already decided to change, which means it is designed for people who are motivated enough to have already tried and failed. The person who reads an article about digital detox is usually not the person who has never considered putting down their phone. They are the person who has put down their phone, felt good for two hours, picked it up again, and felt vaguely ashamed about the whole thing.

I am using AI to help me promote my work
I think I have some type of confession. I don’t even know if I should even start like this. I used AI to generate graphic design, and I kind of like it, but I feel bad. Let me start with when I felt this way, I was cleaning out my home office because my house is a mess, actually, it looks like an abandoned refugee camp.

The Poverty Trap
THE MATH THAT DOESN'T ADD UP 📊 People who have never been genuinely, structurally, no-margin-for-error poor often imagine that poverty is primarily a math problem with a straightforward solution involving better financial decisions, reduced spending, and increased savings discipline. They are incorrect in ways that are difficult to explain to someone whose mental model of financial hardship is not informed by actual experience of it, but I am going to try, because the gap between the imagined experience of poverty and its actual mechanics is where most of the blame, most of the failed policy, and most of the patronizing advice directed at poor people originates, and the gap costs real people their dignity and their lives while those who have never crossed it feel confident offering solutions to problems they have never inhabited 😤

Marketplace Manners
My name is Kendall Defoe and I am addicted to Marketplace. Okay, with that out of the way… I have been using Marketplace on Zuckerberg’s app for too long now to not comment on it. For those of you not in the know, this is the section of that particular social medium where you can sell and buy the old, the unwanted, the unworn, and the unneeded items and objects that clutter the home and mind. And I know what some of you are thinking: do you even Craigslist, bro? I did, until I began to feel as though I was entering a pawn shop full of products that seemed to have fallen off the back of a truck. I knew that there was a problem when I looked for work on the page and was offered a contract…as soon as I delivered something for someone anonymous vendor. It would be better to stick with a page that only wanted to see and buy garbage, not offer me the chance to be jailed or have my bank account drained.
