Saving Money Is a Family Affair

Take into consideration these tips in your next family meeting.

The economy is constantly changing. Employment rates and stock prices rise and fall just like the waves. The best way to prepare for these changes is to save money whenever possible. This isn’t just a concern for the breadwinner of the house. It is something that involves the entire family. No matter where you work, or how much money you earn, you can teach your family the importance of financial responsibility. Here are a few quick tips you can try to encourage your family to save money.

Living Within Your Means

Whether it is wages from a job or earning an allowance, one of the first lessons you should share is how to stick to a budget. This may seem difficult, but it doesn’t have to be. To set a realistic budget, you must know your monthly income. Remember to use your net income, not the gross. Then make a list of all your expenses. This list should include only bills and necessities. Once you have determined your expenses, the goal is to consistently spend less money than you earn every month. You may have to make some tough decisions, like deciding how important those $300 shoes really are, or if you really need that new game system. However, this will allow some breathing room when emergencies arise, or if you simply want to build your savings.

Optimizing Your Home

Of course, every strategy for saving money doesn’t have to start like an Accounting class. You can also teach your family tricks and tips to use around the house. For example, you could show them how to read an electric meter. Observing the amount of electricity the family uses, and the related costs, may cause them to respect something they’d otherwise take for granted. Another good tip is to pay attention to your family’s water usage. It costs more money to heat water for showers, laundry, or the dishwasher. You can start by making everyone aware of this. If you really need to send a message, try creating a schedule or setting time limits. Because this may not go over so well at first, be sure to share any progress with the family. It can serve as a form of motivation.

Discuss the importance of savings.

Savings, and money in general, is an important conversation to have with your family, especially children. In the past, kids were expected to leave these subjects to the adults, and worry about them later. This resulted in serious misunderstandings about money and the responsibilities of adulthood. Now, more parents are willing to share the basics with their children in order to guide them towards better decision-making skills. Start by finding out how everyone in the family feels about money and saving. Then briefly explain the responsibilities involved in running the household and ask how each person can contribute. If you haven’t started paying your children for chores, this could be a good time to start. It would give them an opportunity to learn these lessons firsthand.

Money often has a damaging effect on relationships. Don’t fall in line with the statistics. These tips can be a great start to saving money as a family. Also, don’t be afraid to try out a few other strategies to see what works for you. Every family is different and there is no cookie-cutter approach to managing money. The important thing is not to avoid the subject. Teaching your family to make better decisions concerning money is something that will be beneficial for many years to come.
