Releasing Emotions
Is it healthy to keep emotions bottled up inside?
As the water churns and rushes in at high tide with full force, it collides with the rock, mist spits into the air, and dissipates. The rock formation is back up against the ocean water; over time, the rocks are reshaped by saltwater and natural weather patterns. And the formation of a blowhole takes shape, it is at high tide, the waves come in such force that the water spits out its contents in a mist.
This fitting image illustrates our reaction when tension and frustration get bottled up within. The water (thoughts flood the mind), through our environment it molds our perspective and emotions. It is as though our body and mind are rocks. The intensity with which we bottled up our feelings affects how we walk through life.
Can we learn from nature! Is there a healthier way to remove what is bottled up inside us?
I believe there is! It is through the release of tension and emotion sooner than later.
To view the blowhole in nature is a picture of beauty. Imagine being below as the water rises or standing on the rock as water with much force reaching you. What no longer belonged is released as a mist is now felt by you. So, not dealing with the emotions affects you and those around you.
Studies show that keeping emotions suppressed could cause more harm than good. It can lead to mental and physical problems. Such as depression, anger, anxiety or digestive issues, headaches, and addictions – to suppress the emotions. Is it healthy to keep emotions bottled up? The answer would be a resounding NO! It is important as to how you would let go of the emotions stated above.
To blow off, vocalize what frustrates and saddens you could lead to shattered relationships if not careful, it could cause shame or injury to others. Everyone has a choice about how we respond, choose a release the intention of Love or Hate. When we acknowledge and release troubling, hurtful emotions in a healthy way it gives respect to self and others.
Listed below are three ways one can check in with one's emotions.
1. Acknowledge the emotion – give yourself time to reflect on your feelings and then choose how to react.
2. Ask. Can I let it go? – prioritize what and whose opinion matters most - minimize the emotional impact on you and others.
3. Take action to release emotions. – walking away from the situation, speaking up, or prayer/meditation. Set a time to practice gratitude.
