(And How To Do It)

When you own your own business, it can be hard to not think about your business all of the time. Maybe you finally found something that you really love to do and long for the time when you are able to get back to work. Maybe your work is spread all over the kitchen so that you see it all day long, whether you have time to work on it or not.

It doesn’t matter why you are thinking about your business. What matters is that you take time away from your business. You need (and deserve) it!

Here are some reasons why you need to take time away from your business.

  • It is easy to become burned out when you are working all of the time. If you are always working, you will get burnt out. You may even get to the point where you don’t want to work anymore. Instead of just needing an evening off to unwind, you may need a long vacation!
  • You will come back a better worker. If you don’t allow yourself to relax, you will lose focus. After taking a night off, you will come back ready and willing to put in the hard work.
  • You deserve it! You work hard to support yourself and the people in your life. Make sure that you take time to spend with those that you love. You deserve to relax and enjoy yourself.

The worst part is that it is really hard to separate home and work when they both occupy the same space! Even if they don't, it can still be very hard to give yourself time off. Here are some tips to help you take a break from your business.

  • Set business hours and follow them. Not every business owner sets hours. Many, especially those who work at home, just think that they will work whenever they have time. Some, this makes it seem like they are always trying to fit a few minutes in. They may end up working more since they spread their work out throughout the whole day. Others set hours but don’t follow them. They may start work early or work late. Don’t! Decide when you are going to work and when you are not. Then, enjoy the time when you are not working!
  • Separate home and business. It is very important to have a separate office for your business. This allows you to shut the door when you leave. If you use the kitchen table, you are going to be seeing your work all day and night long, making you think that you have to sit down and get some more work done.
  • Schedule time with those you love. If you have trouble spending time with your family, you may need to schedule time for family, friends, and relaxing. There is nothing wrong with writing down when you are going to relax- as long as you do it!

It is really important to take time for yourself, away from your business. You don’t want to burn out, or you will have trouble getting any work done. You also deserve it. Why would you work so hard, only to find out that you are not enjoying your life? Put down the computer and spend some time with those you love!

That being said, it can be very hard to relax when you have your business in the next room. However, try setting a schedule and sticking to it. You may also need to put time for your family, friends, and relaxing on the calendar too so that you make sure you enjoy part of your day!
