1. Moldy sugarcane

Wang Weiqing, a national second-class public nutritionist, pointed out in a 2015 article published in the Health Times that every spring is a high incidence of moldy sugarcane poisoning, which can cause physical discomfort or threaten life in severe cases. Sugarcane is generally harvested in autumn, so most of the sugarcane sold in spring has been stored for a whole winter. At this time, the weather gets warmer, coupled with the wet spring rain, it is the season when mold is easy to breed. If not stored properly, it will inevitably appear mildew. Trichosporin in moldy sugarcane will produce 3-nitropropionic acid, as little as 0.5 grams can cause a toxic reaction. [1]

2. Bitter nuts

Zhang Wei, a member of the Chinese Nutrition Society, wrote in the Health Times in 2014 that if you eat melon seeds that have turned bitter, you should spit them out and rinse your mouth. The bitter taste of melon seeds and other nuts comes from aflatoxin, which is produced in the mildew process. This toxin is one of the most toxic chemical toxins at present, and its toxicity is dozens of times that of arsenic, a highly toxic poison. Regular intake increases the risk of liver cancer. Therefore, eat mildew, bitter nuts do not be lazy, must be immediately spit out. [2]

3. Sprouted potatoes

Wang Guizhen, president of the Dietitian Association of Weifang, Shandong Province, pointed out in an article published in Health Times in 2017 that longuitine, a toxic alkaloid, is naturally present in potatoes, but normally, the content of longuitine is very low. And if a potato sprouted, it sprouted with high levels of solanine. The main symptoms of solanthin poisoning are nausea, numbness of the mouth and tongue, diarrhea, and harm the gastrointestinal tract of the human body. [3]

4. Dark spotted sweet potatoes

In an article published in the Health Times in 2016, CAI Zhengwen, a national second-class public nutritionist, warned not to buy sweet potatoes with dark spots. Black spots in sweet potatoes are sweet potato black spot disease. Black spot bacteria are not easily killed by high temperatures, and they produce sweet potato ketone and sweet potato ketone alcohol toxins, which mainly damage the human liver, causing vomiting, diarrhea, fever and other symptoms, and in severe cases, bleeding and shock. [4]

5. Moldy ginger

Li Junxian, an attending physician of the Traditional Chinese medicine Department of Sichuan Provincial People's Hospital, said in an article published by Chengdu Business Daily, a famous Sichuan doctor, that ginger placed too long is easy to go bad, moldy and cause cancer risk! Safrole, which contains ginger, is a carcinogen and has been listed in the "Group 2B carcinogen List" by the World Health Organization. General fresh ginger contains only a very small amount of safrole, will not harm the human body. But once ginger mold, rot, its safrole content will increase dramatically, long-term consumption will increase the risk of cancer. [5]

6. Fruit with moldy spots

In 2018, Shan Ying from the nutrition department of Nantong University Affiliated Hospital pointed out in the Health Times that no matter how big the area of moldy fruit is, it is recommended to discard it all and do not eat it any more. Toxins produced by mold can spread from the rotten part through the fruit juice to other unspoiled parts of the fruit. [6]

Cut off the bad part of the food, and you can't eat it!

After food has gone moldy and spoiled, some people will cut off the moldy part and continue eating it! But this is wrong.

Because mildew can exist in places where we can't see it. The toxins produced by mold can spread to other normal parts of the food. Second, once the mold is produced, it is very difficult to remove it. Even if it is cooked at high temperature, it can only kill part of the mold, but still cannot remove all of it.

Therefore, if the food is moldy and spoiled, don't be distressed, just throw it away!
