One of the best witner treks in India

By Mountains CurvePublished 8 days ago 6 min read

The Kedarkantha Trek is set up in the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand, India and constitutes as one of the most intriguing winter trek. This trek is perfect for those who are new to the world of trekking or even for those who go for professional level trekking because this trek has all the aspects of it from the beautiful sceneries that are of higher altitude to the little challenges and to end it up right by getting to the top of that Himalayan peak. In this section, I describe every inch of this magnificent process: the beginning in Sankri, the ascent, and the culmination – the breathtaking sunrise.

Starting Point: Sankri

One starts the journey in the village of Sankri which is located at 6,400 ft above sea level. The starting point for the Kedarkantha Trek is the picturesque village of Sankri that can be reached from Dehradun, the capital of Uttarakhand. The fact that the route to Sankri passes amid the beautiful valleys of Garhwal and covers the banks of the Yamuna River and thick forests, can be treated as the paramount part of the journey.

Sankri is a beautiful tiny village, while some shops and restaurants are available for the trekkers they are very basic. It is good place where you adapt and get used to the environment that you are expectant to encounter in the next days or hours. Here, you are introduced to other trekkers and guides, stock on critical items, and M, above all, enjoy majestic views of mountains.

The Journey Begins: Sankri to Juda Ka Talab

The trail from Sankri to Juda Ka Talab is easy gradient kind trek with moderate steepness passing through thick pine and oak jungle. This 4-5 hour hiking is a good preparation in producing the needed feeling for the terrain and the attractiveness of the area. It’s relatively easy to traverse, accompanied by some form of bird calling and occasional view of wild animals in the forest.

Talab Ka Juda is at an altitude of 9100m and it’s a natural fresh water lake where tall trees and snowy pastures surround it. During winter however the lake will turn into a different scene, a frozen scene as the whole surface of the lake will be covered by ice. This is a perfect place, which will enable campers pitch a tent and sleep the first night on a camping excursion. The camping is great with the sound of birds enveloping the dense trees before sunrise, fresh air from the mountains, and glistening snow on the ground.

Reaching Kedarkantha Basecamp:

The second part of the trek transpires from Juda Ka Talab to Kedarkantha Base Camp. This part of the trek is dominated by a steady climb through even thickerets of trees and through huge open glades. As you move further from the ground, the trees become sparse and you get an opportunity to see the snow covered mountains that are around the zone.

The Kedarkantha Basecamp to lie at an altitude of approximately 6,700 meters gives a view of the Mountains including Swargarohini, Bandarpoonch, and Black Peak. grassy area is the main base component as it creates a large meadow that would be ideal for camping and resting. Here is more opportunity for fire, for marvellous tales to be exchanged with fellow climbers, and for the final climb to the summit.

The nights at the base camp can be quite chilly, though I found them to be absolutely stunning. The hither to, clear, and pollution free atmosphere affords a splendid view of the sky filled with stars and if one is privileged to see the Milky Way, it would be a pretty sight to behold. The base camp is also preferred for acclimatization because when the time comes to attack the actual summit it will still be higher.

Summit Day: The Kedarkantha Sunrise:

The climb to the Kedarkantha peak starts early in the morning, often at 3 am depending on the package type. This initial onset ensures that in the 3 hours of the morning, you have successfully climbed up to Kedarkantha for the exhilarating Kedarkantha Sunrise. It is apparent that the trail from the base camp to the summit is rather steep but still not very challenging, and that kind of expectation that something great is coming always uplifts the mood.

On approaching the higher level, everything is changed: now you can see the snow-covered hills, the frosty trees, and a pure sky. This may however be a little strenuous due to the rough ground in the snow and the slope of the mountain though the view makes it worth the effort. When the climb reaches its highest point at 3500 meters, hikers are shown an awesome view of the whole Himalayan range under one big dome.

To be able to witness a sunrise on the Kedarkantha trek is something that one should not miss. At the dawn of the day, the moment when the first rays of sunlight penetrate the mountain tops of snowy mountains all the space around is covered with a golden glow. One might find it difficult to put into words just how peaceful and visually stunning it is at this moment and yet it is such a privilege to have had it as part of the trek.

The Descent: Below the earth we recently left behind in Sankri, the honey?. decentralized settlement displayed the overwhelming power of its ruling mechanisms.

When hikers are done with this sight, the next thing is to move down the mountain as the sunrise over the summit and surrounding areas provide the best opportunity. On the uplifting track, the views of the journey are different from the return journey which begins from the base camp then towards Sankri. Different from the down slash, the downward trek is faster and leaves you with more time to enjoy the sceneries.

You go through them once more while walking down, and this time the already gorgeous view is enhanced by the feeling of accomplishment. Enjoyment of the scenery is clearly an important factor, the visual splendour having been noted earlier, and while the descent is not associated with the psychology of the sublime, the mental satisfaction of the task successfully completed does tend to contribute to the pleasurable experience.

Best Time To Visit Kedarkantha Trek:

The most appropriate time to visit the Kedarkantha Trek is in the winter season, particularly between December and April, trust me. This time of the year is called the Kedarkantha Snow Time due to which the whole surrounding area becomes a snowy wonderland. The winter conditions also make the trek more beautiful, sharp neat trails, freshly fallen snow and a clear blue sky.

This is best done in the winter, but in the pre-monsoon season (April to June) and or a postmonsoon season (September to November) . The play in every season is different due to the flowers such as rhododendrons in spring and rich foliage in autumn.

Various Things That Every Kedarkantha Trekkers Should Know:

Physical Preparation: You must be healthy both physically and mentally, thus take your exercise regime seriously and include both cardio and strength training exercises. For the trek, the major emphasis will be laid on making the body stronger for the various tasks it has to undertake.

Proper Gear: Many travellers recommend using quality trekking equipment such as quality waterproof hiking boots, thermal wear, high quality backpacks and trekking poles. These layers are especially important when it comes to the preparedness of the wearing to deal with the different temperature regulation necessity.

Acclimatization: To help the body get used to the high altitude take time to move around each camp for altitude acclimatization purposes. Drink plenty of water and make sure that one does not over exert themselves when up there for altitude sickness is likely to occur.

Guides and Support Staff: Their absence of experience in guiding and porterage makes the trekking experience richer. They assist in doing chores, offer useful information, contribute to protection, and aiding in lifting heavy items.

Respect Nature: Practice utmost conservation in your endeavors outdoors. Reminder on maintaining cleanliness of trails, refrain from intruding on the animals’ habitat, and the preservation of the Himalayas.

The difficulty level of the Kedarkantha Trek is moderate, making it accessible yet rewarding and it is not only a trail to be followed and travelled; it is the experience of natural wilderness, the challenge, the adventure, and even the ‘physical self’ discovery. Starting from the mystical woods of the Sankri village to the splendid Kedarkantha Sunrise, each second of this trek is full of anticipation and thrill. From the easiest one for a first-timer to the most challenging one that even professional climbers cannot resist, the Kedaru kanththa trek is a marvel that will remain in your heart for your entire life span. Before you get to witness this miracle of nature, prepare yourself and your challenge well enough and get to embark on the journey of visiting the Himalayas.
