How to Decorate Your Home Like Joanna Gaines
Take a page out of our favorite HGTV host's modern farmhouse book and turn your house into a home!
If you're anything like us, you've spent countless hours watching Fixer Upper on HGTV and oogling over the beautiful home renovations that they do each episode! And, if you are like us, you've wished that you could have the Gaines family redo YOUR HOME!
Well, they are pretty busy, so that probably won't happen (for most of us at least), so the next best thing is to take some cues from the Queen of Shiplap herself and learn how to redo and decorate your home in her style! We've compiled some of the most iconic elements of Joanna's interior design style, and we hope that you find some great inspiration from this article!
Before we delve into the design elements, I want to remind everyone that you don't need to have, or even want, a farmhouse or rustic aesthetic to utilize these design tips and pieces. Some of them can be incorporated into literally any other interior design style!
So without further ado, let's dive into some great ways that YOU can decorate your home just like Joanna Gaines would!
Knock Down Some Walls!
This is something we see the Gaines do in almost every episode of Fixer Upper, and probably one of Chip's favorite parts! Especially if you are remodeling an older home, it probably has a more closed off floor plan with more walls separating the living area, kitchen, etc. You can really bring new life into your home and make everything seem bigger by knocking down some of those walls! Consider knocking down any non-essential walls between your living room and kitchen, or dining room and family room. Opening up the kitchen/dining area to the living rooms is a great way to still feel connected with family and friends while cooking or preparing food!
Shiplap... Shiplap EVERYWHERE!
Joanna isn't known as the Shiplap Queen for nothing! She is famous for incorporating these farmhouse style walls/ceilings in many of her projects! In case you haven't seen this before, shiplap is a technique generally for a wall where wood planks stacked horizontally, like the image below.
This style obviously works very well in a farmhouse or modern farmhouse, but it can also be expanded into a home with a coastal or cottage aesthetic!
Check out this tutorial from Home Depot on how to create your own Shiplap walls!
Along with working in multiple different styles, shiplap walls also work in almost any room in your home! They look great in the bathroom, bedroom, family room, and even your kitchen!
White, White, White!
This is a design element that definitely fits in with the farmhouse and modern farmhouse look, but it can be applied to any home! White furniture, paint, and an overall main white aesthetic can make your house look much cleaner and open, although it does make it more difficult to clean! :)
One easy way to incorporate more white into your home without having to buy all new furniture is by putting white covers over your existing pieces, which will also give them a more cozy and "worn in" feel if you are going for that aesthetic!
Up Your Lighting Game!
If there is something that Joanna is known for other than shiplap, it has to be her use of gorgeous lighting pieces!
When you add a dramatic of unique lighting piece to a room, especially a living room or kitchen, it really can open up the space by drawing the eye up, instead of just horizontally around the room. They are also just gorgeous, and if you are going for the farmhouse look, one of these chandeliers is almost a MUST in your kitchen!
Rustic and Worn Wood is Better Than Polished!
Joanna and Chip are obviously lovers of rustic and vintage items, and if they have the opportunity to re-use a vintage item in a brand new way, they are sure to jump on it! But, we don't all have the time to scour antique markets looking for that perfect piece to repurpose.
Since we don't have that time, a great way to add that vintage feel to your home is by buying wood pieces that already look old! Weathered and rustic wood will give your house charm and add to the coziness for sure. Plus, it doesn't feel as bad if the piece gets chipped or marked, it just adds to the character!
Make sure to share this with any of your friends who love Fixer Upper and Joanna as much as you do!
